Mother and troubled daughter spend a weekend in the family cabin. |
Georgia on My Mind WC 298 I’m the first one up and at ‘em. The sun just popped up from behind the Rockies; the view from our deck is spectacular. “Perfect location for our cabin,” I say to no one as I sip my hazelnut coffee from my favorite cabin mug. I’ve always been proud of myself for finding this jewel after weeks of searching for the perfect retreat all those years ago. The novel I’m writing is set in a cabin much like this one. I am one hundred pages in, with one month left to complete 'Mystery in the Rockies' for my publisher. My husband is back in Denver on business and my son is away at college in California. It’s just my adult daughter, Georgia, and me. I wish I was alone; Georgia can be a handful. Her medication isn’t working, causing us both to suffer. Her outbursts can be scary. There’s not a thing I can do about her erratic behavior, so I’m happy she isn’t up yet. I hear movement in the cabin. Georgia’s awake. Here we go. “There’s coffee,” I yell from the deck. “No, really?” she yells back. “Come join me on the deck.” “Don’t tell me what to do, Mother!” I push up from the glider. “I think I’ll get dressed and go into town. Do you want to come?” “No, I don’t want to go anywhere near that crappy little town!” Thank you, Lord. I will get dressed, scoop up my laptop and drive into town; I am dead-set on writing fifty pages, minimum, even with Georgia on my mind the entire time--wondering if she will burn down the cabin while I’m gone. I hum Georgia on my Mind as I take a wide berth around my daughter on the way to my bedroom. |
