Ode To Lettuce

Every year I grow the tiniest lettuce

Oh lettuce, what can I blame?
for every year, it's always the same
is this some silly garden game?
because it truly is a shame

this year when spring came
the lettuce seeds called my name
but it turned out really lame
big leafy plants were my aim

instead they were tiny
a tad leafy but spiny
and also a wee bit shiny
I don't mean to be whiny

oh, to have homegrown lettuce to crunch
though now I have a hunch
to find other things to munch
like fresh cucumbers (I do have a bunch.)
