Flash Fiction

Saturday
I had to find out how to spell a word for a letter I was writing. For some reason, I was excitedly writing it by hand. OK I know the reason.
Three weeks after I was born, my mother’s best friend had a baby. Both of us girls, both born in April. We became baby friends! Then they moved to another town. However, our mothers were still close and we all got together often, so they thought it would be ā€œcuteā€ to make us pen pals! Of course we hadn’t even been to kindergarten yet. They would have us draw pictures, and they would send them back and forth. Eventually, we did learn to spell, and longer on, we actually started writing back and forth by ourselves. Pen pals!
We’re in our late seventies now, and still pen pals. They didn’t have internet then, in the beginning; We actually didn’t have it until into our twenties! It didn’t even seep into schools until after we had graduated. So, we wrote on paper, with pens, and sent them. Pen pals indeed, and we kept it up. Eventually we both got hooked on internet…
I thought it would be fun to write like we use too! However, I forgot I am a terrible speller. My computer knew… And now I couldn’t even find my dictionary! Who uses one anymore? Suddenly, the computer writing (typing) was better! As I looked for the dictionary, I saw the postman out the window, by our gate. That meant too late to send today anyway… plus, I likely have no stamps… and tomorrow’s Sunday, no postman…
Some of us grow up fast, some slow. I think I’m the last kind. Barbara will get her letter tonight! Not pen pals anymore, now, computer pals, and still best friends!
