Sometimes to become rooted, we first must fly.
Against the Wind

Free spirit I
have wandered
and wondered
if ever I shall feel
the need
to dig deep into
rock or sand,
mountain or blackest soil
and put forth roots
to curl down into the depths,
to cling moist and spread
among the rocks-deeper still
until these shoots find glory
in the deepest realms of earth
thus holding me fast:
Rooted for once against the wind.
Or if in the very need or desire, perhaps,
to send forth these roots
I am, in effect, in reality
on a search for that—
which by very nature
cannot be held fast.
Indeed, must wander ever forward
Choosing to spread not roots deep,
but instead, wings.
