This is a rant! Who is worse, the media or the parents?
This is a rant!

I was driving to work this morning jamming to the mix channel 96.5 when I heard the most stupid thing on earth broadcasting on the radio. One of the most beloved characters on Sesame Street, Cookie Monster, is going to change his persona and not eating so many cookies. Sesame Street is changing his (Cookie MOnster??) image..promoting healthy eating.I am sorry, but eating CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES is what and who the Cookie Monster is, hence the name. I also heard that the song that 85 percent of kids sing, “C is for cookie and that is good enough for me” will change to “A cookie is a sometimes food.” How about, instead of teaching our children that cookies are a sometimes food, why don’t we teach them that the Cookie Monster is a cartoon – he is not real?

What is going on? I understand that obesity is a major concern in the United States not only with adults but children as well, but society is taking this way to far. PBS needs to realize that a cartoon isn’t responsible for their child’s eating habits – the parents are and vise versa.

As a parent, I am aware of my responsibilities as one, I need to be the role model. I don’t depend on anyone to raise my child and I teach him to take responsibility for his actions and not blame friends, television or video games for any wrong - doing.

I believe if you depend on a cartoon to moderate your child’s diet, then I feel that you as a parent are letting him/her down. Television is fiction and that is what needs to be explained to our children or they need to watch a lot less of it.

This is a plea more so than a rant; this is a plea to parents to take charge and have more of a role in their children’s lives. Sit down and talk with your kids and explain right from wrong. Turn off the television and read a book. Turn off the video games and take a walk or ride a bike.

This kind of stuff has been going on for some time now and we need to make a stand for out children’s sake. Don’t let society raise our children because so far, it is doing a horrible job at it!

THE END
