Summary of this Book...
A story about an immigrant family, migrating from the old world to America after being persecuted, finally finds solace in the old west. Only the family is quite special; they’re Werewolves. From the back cover: The thrilling tale of a wolf-woman in the old West as daring and exciting as Interview with the Vampire NADYA Growing up on the edge of the Missouri wilderness in the 1830’s, Nadya knew she was not like other girls. But when she became a woman and the Change came, she discovered just how different she was. For Nadya was a shapechanger, a werewolf like her mother and father before her… The story begins in with young Dmitri. He lives in a small village in Poland. Then one morning he wakes up and something has happened, nothing that could be seen, heard or even smelled. He lives in the same house, but now he lives in Russia and belongs to the Tsar. When Dmitri turns fifteen, the Change finally comes to him and he begins to run every full moon with his family. All is well and free. Then came the autumn of his eighteenth year, crops are meager and people are on edge. One full moon a young calf is found, throat and belly torn open, the bloody remains circled by wolf prints. So the hunt begins and when it is over, Dmitri is alone, the carcasses of seven wolves; mother, father and five brothers left to feed the ravens. After migrating to America, Dmitri lays eyes on beautiful Marietta, who is also a shapechanger, and after a short courtship, they marry. Like many young couples, they were restless, so they packed up their meager belongings and headed west. They followed an old Indian trail westward along the Missouri River, then the Osage River southward into the Ozark range. It is here that Nadya was born. After Nadya's change, William Cooper (a New England farmer who lost his wife of fever) heard the voice of God. And he told him to "go to the wilderness". "Go forth and preach." Unfortunately, he took that to mean, "remove evil, and the evil is wolves". So on the evening of the Change, a hunting party pursued the three wolves in the wilderness around the town, and in the morning, two skins were tied to the back of a horse- her mother and her father. Nadya met the rider, attached and killed him. She buried her parents and the rider, took his horse and a few belonging and headed West. The book is not unlike many historic novels, telling the trials and tribulations of an immigrant family trying to cope in a land fraught with danger and suspicion. Nadya’s coming of age is also like most young girls; flirting with the young men, rebellious to her parents and curious of her place in the universe. The only one thing that she is not confused about is her sexuality, and she is not afraid by it. She knows what she wants, and gets it. The book is filled with passion and romance, adventure and danger, both physical and moral. Nadya is a strong heroine, not easily pushed aside to make way for the “civilized people” of the ever-changing West.
