Summary of this Book...
This is the final book (#8) in the Anne of Green Gables series. As it begins, we find the youngest of Anne's brood, 14 year old Rilla, is a bit spoiled and vain. As World War I breaks out, we see Rilla grow and change as she watches her brothers and friends volunteer. It spans the entire four years and shows how it changed everyone involved. We get a good look at the lives of the the boys and men that left and also the wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends at home.
This type of Book is good for...
Young Adults, History Lovers
I especially liked...
I would not have expected such powerful themes of love, loss, conflict, growth, and bravery from a book in this series, but it brought a new level of admiration for the author. This final installment really brought the series full circle.
I didn't like...
A couple of things that I didn't like about this book was firstly, there seems to be little interaction between Anne and Rilla. What we did see didn't remind me of the old Anne Shirley at all. Secondly, the book summary led me to believe that Rilla and her great love story would be the main focus. They were included, but more in the background.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
After reading this book. I realized how little I know about the Canadian perspective of WWI. I would like to read more.
This Book made me feel...
This book is the first that I've read about the effects of World War I on Canada. I feel like I learned a great deal about life during that time. Especially the women left behind to find their own patriotic paths.
The author of this Book...
Lucy Maude Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, the setting for Anne of Green Gables in 1874. She left to attend college, but returned to Prince Edward Island to teach. In 1911, she married the Reverend Ewan MacDonald. Anne of Green Gables, the first in a series of "Anne" books by Montgomery, was published in 1908 to immediate success and continues to be a perennial favorite.
I don't recommend this Book because...
Don't read this book if you're expecting to read about Rilla and her romance story.
Further Comments...
Although the recommended reading/grade level is 3rd to 7th, I don't think most children would comprehend some of the more significant events until at least 6th grade.
