This is a great introduction to Roman history for tweens, and I enjoyed the illustrations (which were pretty darn funny).

My gripe with the book is that it isn't entirely accurate, as other reviewers have pointed out, but overall it was fun way to engage a kid who couldn't care less about history with history.

This book could be read by an adult in an hour, maybe two. It takes longer when you're chatting about things and occasionally fact-checking.

It does have some darker moments, so I would recommend each parent decide for themselves where their child's development is at before handing it over. The material is handled well, with a heavy dose of humour, but history isn't always pretty and it's called Rotten Romans for a reason.
