John Rain, an assassin with a unique talent for making people look like they died of natural causes, gets involved with a woman in Japan who turns out to also be the target of his next job.

Readers who like more cerebral assassin stories, or those who really enjoy hyper-detailed accounts of Japanese customs and geography.

The amount of time the author spent talking about Japanese geography, customs, etc. It felt like the book was one big long, "Hey, did you know that I know this about Japan?" trivia quiz.

Skip to a different character from The Killer Collective and hope their backstory novels are better than this one.

Like I really have no excuse not to be writing and publishing novels of my own.

Unless you have a particular affinity for Japan, or assassin stories that are light on action but heavy on the character over-explaining their thoughts to the audience, there are more thrilling thrillers out there.

The Killer Collective was one of my favorite books that I read last year. It was engaging and with great characters. So when I learned that I could read solo adventures of many of the characters that teamed up in The Killer Collective, I was excited to delve into their backstories. John Rain was someone I was particularly excited to read about, but I found myself disappointed by this book. The story and the pacing weren't very engaging, and the author spent more time offering little tidbits of information on living in Japan than he did crafting a tense thriller. Overall, it felt more like a casual character study than an important, high-stakes event from the character's past. I'll probably read more of the author's work because I do like his writing style and the other characters in The Killer Collective, but I'm not sure I'm going to be revisiting John Rain's escapades in Japan anytime soon.
