Tally is almost 16, the age when an Ugly can become a Pretty through surgery. Her best friend is already a Pretty though now he seems different to her. When she meets Shay, Tally is surprised that her new friend doesn't want to become a Pretty. Shay takes her to a secret place where Uglies who don't want the surgery, live off the grid. Tally still wants to be a Pretty, however, but when she goes in to have it done, Special Circumstances informs her that she not only needs to find Shay, but lead them to the Uglies hide out. So Tally becomes a spy at the hide out but finds herself regretting it. | ||

We already live in such a looks-obsessed society though it's still interesting to read about a future society who would be cosmetically altered to perfection at a specified age. And I loved that there were others who would rather stay an Ugly and live in peace on their own. | ||
