Logocentric (adj). Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics). Sometimes I just write whatever I feel like. "Dark Skies" by A R I Z O N A DAY 22 — Still one of my favorite bands of the past several years, I think these guys' sound is great. It's distinctive and unique, and reminds me both of a modern electro-pop group and a bit of a throwback 80s band. A lot of their songs are really fun to listen to, even if they have a more serious tone to them, and this one is certainly no exception. This one is off their most recent album, the self-titled ARIZONA from 2023. |
"Lil Boo Thang" by Paul Russell DAY 21 — Like the Gracie Abrams song, this one gained huge popularity on TikTok this year. Which is great for the artist and I'm glad they're enjoying the popularity that comes with it. He came up with a really catchy take on a sample of The Emotions' "Best of My Love" and made it his own. He actually previewed this track on TikTok before the release of his album and it went viral with more than 10 million views, resulting in him signing with a label to release it as a single. |
"World On Fire" by Nate Smith DAY 20 — Nate Smith is another country artist I discovered this year (along with MacKenzie Porter) that I've really been enjoying listening to lately. He had a number of songs I listened to this year, including a couple of duets with Avril Lavigne, who is a surprisingly great country vocalist (and how I discovered Nate Smith this year). He doesn't have too many albums out yet, but based on the strength of his singles and the ones that are out, I'm really excited to follow him as an artist for the next few years and see what he comes up with. |
"Latch" by Disclosure feat. Sam Smith DAY 19 — I legitimately thought this was a Sam Smith song. I had no idea that Disclosure was the name of an English electronic music duo and this is actually their song with featuring vocals from Sam Smith (the same way that other electronic artists like Kygo and Zedd don't typically sing themselves; they just create the beats and have another artist sing on the track). I think Sam's vocals are a great complement to the electronic beat of this song; this is a late-night favorite of mine to listen to when I'm just driving around or staring out the window. |
"Broken By You" by Alexander Stewart DAY 18 — Alexander Stewart has been one of my favorite discoveries over the past couple of years (or maybe just this year?). He has a great sound and some of his songs are really, really catchy. I get the same feeling listening to his music that I did listening to Gracie Abrams at the Taylor Swift concert in 2023; I just have a feeling this artist is due for a breakout sooner or later. Maybe not in a superstar way, but given the quality of the music he's putting out, I'd be shocked if he didn't catch on and gain a lot of popularity sooner or later. |
"Tears For Fun" by Griff DAY 17 — I think this is either the third or fourth time I've featured Griff on one of my "The Soundtrack of Your Life" ![]() ![]() ![]() |
"Healing Out of Spite" by CATTY DAY 16 — I found this song later in the year last year, and listened to it so many times that it was in my Top 100 most listened to songs for the year on Spotify for 2024. ![]() |
"Brighter Days" by Blessing Offor DAY 15 — I found a handful of what I'd call "hopeful" songs this year. There are times when I want something encouraging and positive songs to listen to, for those times when I'm feeling a little depressed or down about something. This was probably the one that I found and listened to the most often this year, and I have a feeling it's going to be one that I listen to pretty frequently over the next few years as well. |
"Daddy Cop" by Zander Hawley from The Rookie DAY 14 — This is a fun one. My wife is a huge fan of police procedurals, so we've pretty much watched all of them at this point. One of the shows we've been catching up on recently is THE ROOKIE starring Nathan Fillion, and in Season 5, Episode 13, they do a traffic stop outside a house where a garage band taunts them with a special song they wrote. Then, a year later, the band came back for a cameo in Season 6, Episode 2 and upped the ante considerably. ![]() |
"caroline" by Zach Herron DAY 13 — I have no idea who Zach Herron is... apparently he first got famous doing a viral cover of a Shawn Mendes song and he was in another band... but this song popped up on a Spotify recommendation playlist and I thought it was pretty catchy. Over the course of 2024, I'd often skip back to replay the song as I was listening to my yearly playlist, so I figured I should feature it here. ![]() |
