Pan and I had to come up with an agreement. He pushed at times (yes, he's Thai). I just sent him a birthday gift (October 14th is his birthday). It's not a loan.

I never told him my income. I think that he thinks it's more than it is. He wouldn't understand how money works for me regardless.

Udon Thani is known for cross cultural hook-ups. The good, the bad and treacherous.

Ah... Isaan... never spicy enough. Don't take it personally.

Street food can be awesome. I like roti, chicken livers, fried chicken or fish. 7/11 also helps.

I never heard of a pink card. Thai paperwork is confusing and Pan and others helped at times.

12.000 baht is normal. It's why a 200 baht meal is a lot for average Thai workers and nothing to most ex-pats. A pizza can cost 250+. I like my fish-fry with coleslaw and french-fries for 73 baht and roti for 35 baht. Prices should be higher in Hua Hin than Udon Thani, lower in SiSaket and presumably lower as well in Roi Et.

Phra Prathum is on my list as are other spots south of Hua Hin.

Most of Isaan, not all, speaks a dialect of Lao. Most will understand Thai as the languages are cousins and TV is mostly Central Thai.

4 days of work, 3 off sounds perfect.

What Province (จังหวัด) is Nada from?

As for rain... it's normal. Drying in the north of Isaan though. 33°/23° and mostly sunny this week in Udon Thani.

I slept better next to Pan. Reality can trump fantasy.

I paid 6.500 baht. Small place but very convenient. Pan arranged it. What a blessing.

I had to keep my place in Montana because it's cheap as long as I don't move. Two places = ~18.000.

I expect to pay about 10.000 should I return.

Micro-Managed

I love to cook, but when I was single, cooking wasn't something I did often. With the price of street food here in Thailand and the amount of dishes that need cleaning afterwards, preparing food for one was not as fun as it is for two.

Nada is a great cook, and I try and help with the process as much as possible. I do this because I love her, but also because I want to learn. One of the troubles I'm experiencing is Nada hovers over me whenever I try and take some of the responsibility for cooking our food. I get it...she's way better than me, and the proof is in the pudding.

We have an outdoor kitchen and I feel right at home with a gas stove top. I've watched Nada prepare Tom Yum a few times, and because she has worked hard over the last two days, I offered to make dinner on the condition that she allow me to do it on my own from start to finish.

When it was done, I tasted the soup and it was perfect. I added the shrimp and tomato last, so as not to overcook them. I offered Nada a taste and she seemed pleased with my efforts. But then, she said it wasn't spicy enough and wanted to add chilli. At that moment, I felt my heart sink. Call me over-sensitive, but I put a lot of love into that soup, and to have it critiqued by the one I was so eager to please, hurt like a MF.

I did as she wanted and added chilli to the broth, but I don't feel like eating now. I'm going to go for a shower and try and put this behind us. I don't think I will be volunteering to do any cooking in future. Looks like I'll be stuck doing the dishes ongoing.
