Today I thought I'd have a little rant about change. It seems to me unless something is isn't in a constant state of change then it can't be right.

Mobile phones for instance, almost every few months the owners of Apple or Sanyo are shouting from the roof tops about their new and improved models. I look at the phone in my hand, which is only three years old, and wonder how did this piece of technology, which was state of the art not so long ago, be so outdated, so yesterday.

The updates come thick and fast.
There is a new update. It will be downloaded as soon as this phone is plugged to a power source. I feel helpless under the constant pressure. Apparently it's a phenomenon described as "production pressure. This pressure is driven by algorithms favouring high-frequency posting, the desire for social validation and the fear of irrelevance.

It's not just mobile phones though, the words: Bigger and Better echo through our daily lives. I have made one true observation and that is things don't last anymore. Built in obsolescence. Electrical items are designed to fail as soon as the warranty runs out. When I married in 1965 people bought things expecting them to last for many years. Not anymore. People want change, they want new, better, bigger constantly.

Why can't people see if something is working well it doesn't need to be changed. Perhaps that's the cause of the high rate of divorce, as they seek a new 'model' one which is brighter, shinier, prettier, more handsome

I don't like the new updated version of WdC either, I know many do, just my opinion. As I write this the curser is doing a jig!

Prompt: Let's talk about memorable experiences in your life.

I'm pretty sure I've previously written about my memorable experiences before in this blog but they say a good story is worth repeating, or something like that!

I feel blessed to still be on this earth and witnessing all the amazing leaps in technology but I guess my memories are filled with the times before, when technology was a word I didn't even say. So I suppose the mundane things are memorable to me. A time when life seemed more simple and expectations barely existed. Our first little house, filled with secondhand everything, I think of with fondness.
Bringing my baby home was memorable, I remember being terrified. I'd had no experience with babies and was sure my ineptitude would be the end of her very short life.

Leaving my country and family to travel across the world was a memory I'll never forget or the 36 hours of air travel or the consequent sickness.

So I guess something doesn't have to be earth shattering for it to be memorable, the day to day can be too.

Prompt: We're seeing more DUI (driving under the influence) related deaths. Do you feel the consequences are high enough or should they make them more severe? I know we all live in different areas, is it just in the states or is it problem where you live as well.

I think DUI is a worldwide problem. Here in Perth a medical specialist was charged with driving under the influence causing death. There is CCTV footage of him driving at excessive speed through the suburbs. His own dash camera shows the journey he undertook that fateful night, the audio reveals how angry and drunk he was. He ended up crashing into an Uber. A young woman who was just getting into the vehicle was killed instantly, the Uber driver has life altering injuries.
In court this week the offender was given 8.5 years before being entitled to parole. The judge, in his summary, said "there are no winners here." I disagree. The driver won. He got off light. After eight years he can get out and live his life, fortunately without his medical license, but that twenty year old, who was doing the right thing after a night out by catching an Uber, is dead.
He took a life and should have received a much harsher sentence.

Did you find anything in the newspaper or on line that caught your eye.

I'm often bemused by the news people who write the headlines in the newspapers and magazines. They love a good pun don't they? Do they go to a special pun classes I wonder? Some of them make me cringe. I'm trying to think of some off the top of my head and the only one that comes to mind this week is about Prince Andrew or Andrew Mountbatten Windsor to give him his new title: Overthrone.

I saw that President Trump's speech lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, that's pretty interesting, the fact that is not the speech.

I saw on the news that scientists have found a way to remove painful memories. But would that be a good thing?

The Olympics, have been going on for 13 days now, how do you feel about the coverage-- the variety of primetime events, the announcers?

Australia isn’t a country known for winter sports and yet this time around we’ve been doing quite well.
I’ve loved watching the events I’ve actually watched on TV. The camera work is brilliant, better than being there. I love the bravery of the young competitors and the skill.
The ice skating is breathtakingly beautiful and i figure we’re very fortunate to be able to watch for free such a fabulous sport.

Prompt:
"Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place."
Zora Neale Hurston

Now that Valentine's Day is near, what do you think real love is?

Real love is the one that survives the lows as well as the highs. As lovely as it is romantic love can’t last. But it can be replaced by something stronger. Loyalty is a kind of love and can’t be beaten in my opinion, because whilst flowers and promises are desirable, knowing that there is one person who will always have your back no matter what, is irreplaceable.
Of course one can never tell if your chosen partner will be the forever one until the journey is through, so it’s all a matter of faith, hard work and commitment. I guess I’m getting towards the end of that journey with my life partner after being together for 65 years, so hopefully we’ll creak to the finishing line together.

But maybe the only genuine love is the love a mother has for their child, it seems no one questions it, it is just a given.

Prompt:
“Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.”
Elie Wiesel
What are your thoughts on friendship, generally or personally speaking?

Throughout my life I have had different feelings about the importance of friends. I’ve never felt the need for a large group of friends. At school I always had one special friend, we were together every day for over ten years until we left school and as happens when we went on our separate ways, it was as heartbreaking as any close relationship ending is. I visited her when I returned to England to see my family. It had been over forty years since this friend and I had been in contact. I knocked on her door and asked her to “fill me in on what’s been happening since I saw you last!” We sat and talked in her kitchen as if we’d never missed a day.
Nowadays I have a group of friends but only a very few whom I know I can depend on in a crisis. I hope they feel they can depend on me too.
Friendships can be hard work sometimes, some people expect too much from a friend. I’ve experienced this in the past and it can be a difficult situation. My friends and I can survive long absences and when we do catch up we simply carry on where we left off. That’s a sign of true friendship.

Prompt:
What are some things you would miss if you no longer had them?

What a question! I guess there must be hundreds of things. Yet having said that, I have lived quite well without many things. When we travelled around Australia in our caravan for almost a year I loved not having much. I liked the fact I could do the “housework “ in ten minutes.
We had four of everything, even though there were just us two, in case we had visitors.
Our clothes were pared down to basics, the same with shoes and underwear.
I think the one thing I’d really miss though is my heated hair brush. My hair is a frizzy mess if I don’t use it. Yes that’s the only thing I can think of atm. Oh yes, my iPad and phone.

Prompt:
“Hot chocolate is like a hug from the inside.”
Do you like hot chocolate, and what are your most favored hot drinks?

I am definitely a tea drinker. The idea of coffee when I’ve only just woken up is actually disgusting. So tea for me brought in to me whilst still in bed by my husband. Only then can I think of starting my day. Breakfast includes more tea or even two. But then something strange happens around ten thirty, that’s when I need a coffee, tea will not do. And then that’s it for coffee. So back to drinking tea on and off throughout the rest of the day. No hot chocolate. No more coffee. Just tea.
