Does anyone have any sage advice about how to quit smoking when you can’t use any of the quit smoking aids? Twice I’ve tried the patch, and twice it’s landed me in a mental hospital for suicidal ideations. They won’t even consider giving me any of the pills, because they’re known to cause suicidal ideations. I get crazy mean when I try to go cold turkey, and I’ve got four kids - I can’t be crazy mean! I need to quit, but it seems like I have everything working against me! |
We have a forum here on Writing.Com where you can hold yourself accountable for any goal you choose. It's called "Early to bed, Early to rise" because that's how it started out, but you can choose ANY goal for yourself. I suggest you give yourself a goal of gradually reducing your daily cigarette count and check in with the forum how it worked out. So, if you currently smoke 20 cigarettes per day, challenge yourself to smoke only 19 for a few days, then 18, etc. For each day that you achieved to stay within your "allowance," you give yourself a checkmark or other tracking marker. At the end of the month, you win a merit badge. After two or three months, you might find staying smoke free or smoking very little easier.

Dopamine is a powerful chemical (drug) which is produced by our brains. The more you consider smoking as a pleasurable thing, your brain will continue to give you hits of this chemical. Force yourself to start considering smoking as something that makes you sick to your stomach. Little by little your brain will stop giving you hits of Dopamine when thinking of smoking. Takes time but works. |
