Help Needed!

I'm having a rough time describing a town because there are terms that I don't know and I am not sure where to look for them. I have tried to Google and even went to the visual dictionary website, but they only have a description of a modern city. The only word I know is back alleys and that's it. Does anyone have any suggestions on books or websites that I could use for research?

Thank you!

So, I had a question for writers in this site about flashbacks. There's a chapter where my main character starts to remember a flashback because of a situation she's currently in. I don't want to break the chapter and make a new one just to explain a paragraph length of the flashback. So my question is:

Can I add a quick flashback, that is a paragraph length, into the chapter? Would the readers be confused or is that a forbidden technique in writing?

Thanks!
This is completely okay to do. Sometimes authors give a clue right at the start of a paragraph break, other times they write the whole paragraph in italics (my personal preference) but as long as you smoothly make it clear it's a flashback, then it most certainly is allowed. *Smile*
Awesome! Thank you for responding!
I've been working on my book far more than ever. I'm consistently writing almost every day and I have reached chapter 17. This may not seem like a big deal to a lot of you, but it is too me. After 8 rewrites on the whole book, I feel like this is it. Sure, the book will need some editing, but at least I got my writing style down and that's very important.

This is so exciting!

I just sent out the first chapter of my book and I am getting nervous.
So, I finally started writing again (YAY!) and I was reading my notes and rough draft yesterday when I came across with a dilemma. One of my supporting characters is completely useless. He has no purpose. I was going to delete him; however, there is a high count of female characters than male characters and I do not want that. So then I thought, maybe change one of the female characters into a male, but if I do that then I have a serious number of changes to work on for my book series. This is a 10-year project for me so that is a big change. So my question to everyone is:

Has anyone dealt with this sort of dilemma? Where did you need to change or delete a character?
