Hello all. Had a bit of a setback, but still here. Feeling like I was lost in the Aether recently, but I've got the velocitor refueled now, and hope to be catching up to Spartacus Kane soon. The Pandora has been resupplied, and am headed back to assist Miss Puryear in getting her airship ready for the skies. SEE YOU SOON!
So, my world changed in April...to say the least, lol. to make a long story short, avoiding all the yada yada, I had a stroke on April 15th, which has left me in a wheelchair. I've worked my way through the depression, and now realize I can spend time doing what I wasn't able to find enough time for before. I've recovered the use of my left hand now, so I could type again...and now just write on a tablet...so, don't even need the hand. But at least I'll be writing again. I will be working on getting back in the swing, and will be trying to write for a source of income in the future. I do have a request, though...for anyone who reads this. I need to restart my game...the rules are simple: 1. Look around you, and pick out three items. 2. Send a list of the three items to me, and tell me what genre you enjoy most. 3. I will write a short story and return it to your mailbox, making an effort to make you happy with the result. I will also try to get my account back up and running at full steam ASAP, for anyone who might be interested in Dr. Gloriosky's files and how they have changed lives. New chapter, New life...hope to hear from someone soon...thank you for your participation as I get this all in gear!
Back in Texas after the stroke, I fell ill with a stomach bug and ended up back in a hospital. Fortunately, the doctors here are helping me continue my rehabilitation efforts. I've started moving my left foot today, independent of the rest of the leg. One never realizes how simple things like that can have an effect on their attitude. In short, cherish everything in your life, even the simplest of things.
Rough week. This week I lost my last lifelong friend. The world became too much for him a few years ago, but he soldiered on to support his family and his business. Last month, his last child moved out into life as an adult, and he restructured his business so that it would go on without him without telling anyone in his family. Then, he sent me a text that said simply: "It's time for me to take the long walk. Live Well, Be Well" I am now officially the Last Man Standing...I'll be editing for a couple of days now, and will start digging around in that box again for y'all. If I'm tardy, just give me a little prod...lol. Oh, if I sound cavalier about any of this, feel free to ask me questions about where the 'tude comes from......;D
I've just edited an item in my portfolio:
Once again, I am editing. Does anyone else come back to their work and find that one word left behind from a previous edit, or a piece of dialogue that just went nowhere? I'm sure someone does, but I have to admit that finding something after the third edit and a couple of years is frustrating. This is where I often find myself doubting if I even have an audience...lol. But, no matter, I'm going on. Dr. Gloriosky and Captaing Spaulding will surely not let me rest any longer. |
I absolutely find that kind of thing, or I have missed a word and reread it a thousand times and never noticed it wasn't there. Editing our own work is important, but having a good beta reader is priceless.
Oh, hey! I think anyone who takes their writing seriously has the same doubts you have. And as for finding issues to tweak after a long break, despite a few previous edits--I think that speaks highly of your growth as a writer! Try to look at your current editing process with some compassion, maybe as you'd offer to a fellow student of the craft. My bet is that, in the time since you set that story aside, you've been reading--a lot. (If I'm wrong, you've been doing something that's making a big difference in your writing!) You're catching details you didn't notice before, finding things you can improve on that you didn't recognize before. Give yourself some credit! BTW, Spaulding is a long-time family name, so I'm very curious to check out your story.
I'm now working on the next addition to the tale, and must take a moment to give my most heartfelt thanks to an anonymous benefactor who helped me get restarted recently. Here is an Irish blessing for you, whoever you are: May your paths be well lit, and gentle breezes surround and comfort you in times of need. May both your heart and your pantries be full, and your hearths safe and warm. Thrice spoken, Once done...Bless you and yours always. Oh, and if a clockwork cat should appear on your doorstep, just place your hand on his head...he'll take care of the rest...
Finally getting back to the keyboard after dealing with the pandemic and all the weirdness of the past year. No sooner did I get back, than I was hammered with writer's block. I realize now that I had allowed all the overwhelming CRAP in the world to stack up and block me. What to do, What to do? Try this. Write about it...that's right...just write it down. Starting on July 1st, I just started writing down EVERYTHING THAT I FELT WAS STACKED UP ON ME. I filled an entire college-ruled 100 page spiral notebook, finishing on the morning of July 4th. Then I went outside and took down my flag. I started writing, though, and I'll share more with you very very soon.
Well, two and a half years...Covid has been devastating, and there just aren't enough hours in a day to keep up with it all. Total loss as work stands at 1 doctor and 5 nurses all lost to this virus. Someone mentioned I should write about it, but I just want to refrain from that.... At any rate, I'll soon be back up and writing again, thanks to the ebbing tide of the pandemic, and I will be able to once again board the Pandora and get back to that file box. In the meantime, Constantine is somewhere out there in the aether, and I'm trying to get him back here...he's got the back door key to Mrs. Hudson's boarding house, and she doesn't have an extra copy. So, if any of you out there see him, please let him know I'll wind him up as soon as he arrives home.
It's been a long, long year. As an ICU nurse, I have been pushed far beyond what I thought were my limits by this pandemic. I do hope that everyone here has chosen to get vaccinated, even if it's just to protect others. I was at the bedside of the first Covid-19 fatality in Texas, and have since lost 3 co-workers to the virus. I haven't had the energy to write, but soon hope to resume telling the tale of the files of Dr. Gloriosky. To what fans I have, please be patient. The road has been long and winding since March of 2020, and I'm afraid there is great toil and grief yet ahead. I wish you all health, happiness, and wonder in the days ahead.
I seem to have fallen victim to the real world for a while, and haven't been able to get back to writing. I am in the process of changing that fact, and just reorganized my portfolio a bit to make it easier for those who actually want to read my Steampunk stories in their proper order, along with my latest entry. If you'd like to read it all, just go to my portfolio, and start with the top story. They are all numbered and in order. There are a few items in between chapters that are a part of the mix, and were written right there where they are listed in the order of the pieces. I invite everyone to comment, criticize, and/or suggest. Thank you to my loyal readers for your kind comments in the past, and I hope you enjoy the newest entry "Invalid Item" .
Well, just had to make a new entry to the blog with ""Invalid Entry" ". Here's hoping someone understands what I mean.
Because of my brain injury from Iraq, I tend to not read much, so I won't be sending you a list of words for a story, but I do with you luck and admire how far you've come!
I enjoy writing character driven stories, I appreciate good natural dialogue and a twist in the tail (tale)
Well looking around me as I lie in my bed readying for sleep here in Australia the bedside clock reads 22.54, so that’s my first of the three objects. As I look through the white wooden shutters out into the darkness I see the moon. It’s not full as it’s waning now but the eucalyptus trees are silhouetted against it. That’s number two.
The closet door is ajar, perhaps I should get out of bed and close it, because who knows might be lurking there?
Good luck.
Cheers Sue
