"When my out-of-state friends visit me here in Florida - usually to hit the theme parks - I always make a point of showing them the "real" Florida, as well. I take them to the springs, swamps and prairies, and down the back roads to places like Micanopy, Evinston and McInstosh. Evegan, the setting for "Mooncalf", is such a place as well. This book is a spot-on portrayal of growing up in rural Central Florida in the 60's. I know that life firsthand and Zern captures it in such a way that not one element of the place and time is left lacking. This story meets my highest criteria of what a book must deliver in that it is not predictable (You may think it is, but then you see you've been surprised!) and it offers much food for thought (A full meal perhaps - dished up southern-style.).
