In this chapter of this story, Vaz found himself in a dire situation as the Odeisian army disintegrated around him. His fellow soldiers abandoned their posts, leaving him bewildered and questioning the fate of his homeland. Obrik, a friend, informed him that Odeis had fallen to the Ultesnian Empire, and his village had been destroyed. Faced with the loss of everything he held dear, Vaz declined Obrik's offer to band together for survival, choosing instead to isolate himself in his grief.
The following day, Vaz scavenged for food and contemplated his uncertain future in a town he had once sought to destroy. As night turned to day, he encountered a radiant woman with angelic features who offered him a chance for redemption. She revealed that seven wingless angels had been born, and only they could combat the demons threatening humanity. Vaz accepted her mission to rescue the remaining babies, particularly one in danger, the prince of Pin, named Dwayne.
Upon arriving at the gates of Pin, Vaz faced scepticism from the guards, who dismissed his claims of an angelic warning about the prince's peril. Despite his insistence on the urgency of the situation, he was met with hostility and was nearly taken into custody. The arrival of Babenlo, an earl from the Ultesnian Empire, shifted the focus, as he was treated with respect by the guards, highlighting the disparity between Vaz's status and that of the nobility.
Vaz's attempts to seek help from the town mayor were met with despair when he learnt that the prince had died from an illness. Overwhelmed by the news, Vaz felt the weight of his failure and walked away, burdened by the loss. Meanwhile, Babenlo and his advisor traversed the woods, unaware of the danger that awaited them.
In a moment of desperation, Vaz launched an attack on Babenlo's carriage, hoping to confront the threat to the prince. The ensuing chaos saw Babenlo bravely cut down a net that had ensnared them, allowing for their escape. As the carriage sped away, Vaz was left defeated, grappling with his inability to protect the prince and the overwhelming sense of loss that consumed him. This chapter encapsulated themes of loss, redemption, and the struggle against overwhelming odds, setting the stage for Vaz's journey ahead.
