Good effort. I see a few errors in spelling and grammar. Spend a little more time editing and I think you will be happy with the result.

Were you trying to show how a person "starved for love and attention" would react to a small kindness?

First paragraph, third sentence: To whom did he/she give the compliment?

I really liked your use of the buttered popcorn as a silent thank you.

I loved the plot:
A puzzle (the pill John put in his pocket).
Sudden shift from grieving husband to murderer.
Alternating anger, insanity, and dreams of his island paradise.
Detectives and Jill pushing and pushing.
Crisis triggering panic.
I wondered if Timmy had put some of his milk in John's coffee. But the blue M&Ms were pure genius! Excellent character development for a short story.
