My first poem, so please be gentle :)
A week spent in the Big Apple had to end,
in the middle of the night we hailed a yellow cab
to take us to JFK.
Through bleary eyes we checked in
and waited for the call to board

New York in February was bitterly cold,
dagger like icicles smashed to the ground next to me.
My two friends and I had been everywhere,
almost missed the Empire State.
But now it was time to go

Visited the Twin Towers and many New York Bars,
walked miles to find a pint of Newcastle Brown.
Shared a room in a hostel with a man
from the other side of the world
who knew where our little home town was

Now we walk onto the plane still tired and sad
in the middle of the night, freezing.
I got the window seat… of course!
The view was breath-taking, suddenly awake,
lights and scrapers made the stars in the sky

Bye bye New York, maybe see you again sometime
both of us older, changed by life’s events
