Odd behavior at the gym


I never was a "gym" person. Lifting weights was something that was alien to me.
Why would want to lift weights? They are so heavy.
Don't get me wrong; I did admire they way people looked who work out. I just didn't have the motivation.
My last semester of college I was scrambling at the last second for easy credits. I stumbled upon a "weight training", course. It was once credit and it met two times a week on Tuesday and Thursday.
So I started to work out twice a week. It was easier when you were forced to do it.
To make a long story short I started to see results and I've been working out ever since.
Keep in mind, however, I am NOT a gym person. It has turned into a hobby for me and I work out five times a week. But it does not dominate my life.
Which brings me to the topic of this writing. Odd gym behavior.
There are the obvious things that most people notice. Guys staring at themselves in the mirror. Guys screaming in the middle of a set. Guys attempting to hit on girls who are just trying to work out.
I dont consider the gym to be a social place, I rarely talk to anyone. If I do it just a passing hello.
I am going to admit something. I do sometimes get stoned before I go to the gym. Nobody really understands how I can do it. It's just fun for me. To know for a fact that I am the only person who is under the influence of drugs. It doesnt really make a difference on how I work out.
Most of the time this is when I notice the "odd" behavior.
First I will discuss the "motivators". This is fairly self explanatory. On a bench press, one guy is liftng the weights the other is screaming at him to lift the weight.
I go to the gym by myself. However on days that I work out my chest I need someone to spot me.
Keep in mind I am stoned most of the time.
It is like rolling a dice. Will I get a guy who will just quietly give me a spot; or will I get a "motivator"?
When I am bench pressing, I would prefer the guy to stay quiet. It is my luck that this almost never happens.
"Excuse me, could I get a quick spot man?" I say.
"Sure." The guy says.
I get down on the bench and grab the bar and begin to lift the weight up and down.
"CMON!" He screams. "THIS IS NOTHING!!!!"
I try not to laugh.
"NO WEIGHT!!!!" He screams again. "CMON YOU GOT THIS. IT'S ALL YOU!!!!
I start to slow down as the weight seems heavier and heavier with every repetition.
"CMON PUSH!!!!!! GET THAT WEIGHT UP!!!!"
I cant do anymore and I stop.
"Great set man," he says. "Let me know if you need another spot."
Doubt it bud. I know these guys have good intentions. I just cant comprehend how they can feel comfortable screaming at someone they dont know. Doing it with a friend is one thing, but a stranger?
Enough about the "motivators".
Then there are the Richard Simmons type guys. Headband, tank top, short shorts. These guy are hilarious. Most of them are middle aged.
These guys can be seen engaging in an array of odd behavior.
Like jogging in place in the middle of the gym. Or doing jumping jacks and counting out loud . Or a guy standing directly across from a mirror and shadowboxing his reflection. The best is when these types are lifting weights. They make sounds like they are having sex with a super-model.
I lift weights just like these guys do, I know these sounds arent necessary.
