A poem about the effects of divorce on a small boy.
The little boy just stood and loudly wept.
The man so slowly disappeared from sight.
The lad couldn’t understand about vows unkept,
merely that the man didn’t look back that night.

His older brother, mother, and he soon moved.
Another state became his home, which did entail
a lessened childhood of which he disapproved.
He knew his father only as presents in the mail.

Now grown, the boy when deep asleep still hears
a voice that asks what terrible thing he had done,
for feeling flawed is chief of his subconscious fears.
What else would’ve made his father abandon the son?
