Waiting is such sweet agony....
Written for "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window. (No more than 300 words)
Prompt: Write a story in which the main character is waiting for someone
___________________________

I waited patiently for his arrival a month ago. After all, the doctor had reassured me that he was definitely coming. I remembered all the visits from friends and family, all wanting to be there when he made his presence known. I wished I could tell them not to bother. He’s a bit shy, I think, and being in front of so many people would make the visit an uncomfortable one. I wanted to be ready for him – in my own special way.

But he never showed up, and I was greatly disappointed.

Nowadays, the hours are long as I sit by the window, the sun’s rays warming my cold skin as I long for him. The pain in my heart is one that only he can ease, no matter how much my parents try to reassure me that I’ll be fine. How can I make them see? How can I make them understand that my life is not complete without him? It seems unfair that he came to visit my sister a year ago, and left so quickly without saying goodbye.

However, I have great news! I got a message from him earlier today. He’s definitely coming and I just can’t wait. I open the bottle of tiny white pills, pour a handful into my mouth, and make myself comfortable on the bed, trembling in anticipation.

But ah…how the hour creeps by slowly, and breathing gradually becomes difficult. Eventually, I hear the door opening, and watch his looming shadow approach. With an effort, I manage to smile, noticing my precious sister standing beside him. Together, they engulf me in a waft of warmth and then merciful darkness. See, Mom and Dad? I told you it would be done quietly, for my endless wait is finally over.

         Death has returned.
