a narrative poem about how it happened
It all began with the song they put on.
Outside; it was raining ever so lightly,
Inside; the atmosphere was comfortably warm.
Faces flushed with all the cheeriness and dancing
as they talked like birds chirping in spring time.
Taking a bite of food now and then,
laughing intermittently at the jokes of one another.
Everyone was talking and dancing and waving
everyone except her.

She sat back in a corner with hands resting in her lap
It was easy to mistake her for a queen.
Strands of hair delicately falling across her face,
like chocolate melting down a delicious treat.
She sat quietly looking at what was in front of her,
as if holding a little secret that only she knew.
Amidst that crowd she didn’t think she would be noticed.
Contented from the thought,
she sat back hoping to have a good time.

In the other corner stood a handsome countenance,
with looks quite pleasing if not to make you weak in the knees.
Incredibly, he wasn't dancing hand in hand with some pretty face.
Instead, something seemed to have caught his utmost attention.
Silently admiring the divine creature seated across the room,
he stood there thinking what to do.
With a glass in hand and hesitant steps,
he covered the distance to her seeming throne.

Scared to destroy the serenity surrounding her,
he uttered a slight ‘hello’ and asked to sit next to her
Now that the difficult part was done,
he tried to reach out into her world.
She talked like snow flakes falling in your hands.
And he wondered, "Could anyone be so lovely?."

After he had talked just to hear her speak
He dared to ask if she would like to dance.
With a shy smile spreading across her face,
she nodded in agreement and it wasn’t long
before she started floating across the floor.
Hands supporting her fragile body
she let herself be carried away.

Dreamily, staring into her beautiful, wide eyes
he’d never known this feeling to have existed before.
Like violins strumming out heavenly music
Like taking a journey across the azure sky
Like being buried in a mound of flowers
He’d never known his heart to melt like this before.

He’d never wished for a moment to last.
Believing it would never happen to him
but that was until he saw her face
and found himself falling prey
to the fictitious feeling they called love,
And so the story that had started with a dance,
gave two people what you call a life-time chance!
