Someone pointed out faults with the old one - here's the new one! |
Hi, my name is James. I’m just a normal thirteen year old boy; in most cases. There is something weird about me, I will admit, but I don’t like it, and don’t want it. A lot has gone on in my life. My grandfather, whom I was named after, died when I was six. A few months later my father followed him. I was left scared and abandoned. It wasn’t long before mum brought in her new boyfriend – Michael. I don’t like him much. I think the feeling is mutual. I hate my mum for what she’s done; bringing him home merely months after dad died. I don’t speak to them much, and that’s a good thing. Mum is the only person who knows about me. She might have told Michael, I wouldn’t know, but nobody else knows, so I’m safe; for now. I remember when I first found out about me. When I was five a man came up to me in the street and offered me sweets. Me being five, I was naïve. I took them, he seemed genuine. He said there was more at his flat if I wanted to go and have a look. I was thinking about it when he started talking, but his lips weren’t moving. He was telling me he was going to take me back to his flat, and keep me there locked away, and do cruel things to me. I turned away and ran. We were in a busy street, so he didn’t chase me. That was when I was five, when I first realised that I could read minds. Reading minds is one thing, but this, was a joke. I remember sitting in my room when I was seven. Mum and Michael were arguing. I was thinking about dad. Mum and Michael were shouting really loud. I got really angry and just wanted it to stop. The door started slamming over and over, the vase on my windowsill flew across the room and shattered on the wall. Michael came running upstairs, I remember exactly what he said to me, “What on Earth are you doing?” He was really angry. “I don’t know!” It was true. “What do you mean you don’t know? Did you throw that vase across the room?” “No, I don’t know what did it.” “Stop lying, James! You know what I do to liars!” He was going to hurt me again. He had no right, he wasn’t my father. He started to move towards me. I got really scared and angry, suddenly without warning he was thrown off his feet and onto the floor. I didn’t know what had happened. Michael just sat there looking at me. Half afraid, half amazed. “What happened there?” Demanded Michael. “Look, I’ve told you. I don’t know!” “I’m fed up with it James, all of this weird stuff! I want you out of here!” “He’s not going anywhere Michael.” It was mum. Surely she’d help me. “It’s not his fault.” She continued. “He can’t control it. Now let’s just forget everything that’s happened today, I think we’re all better off without the memory.” And with that, Mum and Michael left me alone in my room. I understand what happened that day. I still can’t tell you yet though, because there’s more. Apart from the fact that I’m brilliant at Karate, Boxing, Shooting; to cut a long story short I’m good at everything. Apart from all that, there is one thing that sets me apart from all other children, from all other adults even; I can fly. You may be thinking I’m crazy right now. I’m not, it’s all true. I was really happy when I found out, but I was also a little sad. You see, finding out that I could fly was perhaps the happiest day of my life, and also the worst day of my life. I could fly. Yeah. Big deal. I was a freak. I could read minds. I could blow things up and break things when I was angry. I could fly! I was no normal kid. I had to be stopped. When I was ten, I was competing in our schools annual sporting event, sports day. Our school field is really big, and our school is renowned for producing top athletes, so we’re all pretty fit. I was gearing up to get ready for the 100m. I usually won, because I was so fast. I was good at everything so running came really easily to me. I heard the bang of the cap gun used 2 set us off, and then I was running, not full speed, I didn’t want to look like I was a show off. But then something happened. There was a dog, it was huge, it was running down the track, towards me because I was the fastest. It must have thought it was some kind of game, but it wasn’t it wasn’t a game and it wasn’t funny. I started running full speed, I came off the edge of the track, and had to jump to miss the water bottles. Now ok that sounds pretty normal. But when I jumped, I didn’t land again. I was only a few inches up, but I was running through the air. Thankfully no-one noticed. I was really happy with myself afterwards, I had managed to get the dog to chase me back to it’s owner, and I learned that I could run through the air, did that mean I could fly? I thought so. I was happy and yet sad. I was no average boy, I was a freak, and I couldn’t control my powers. I was potentially dangerous. That very night I went home and spoke to Mum about what had happened that day. She told me she had always known I would be special, and her father knew someone that could help me hone my skills. My Mum’s father was a really nice man, he looked very old and always dressed in weird clothes. I had only ever seen him once and he had done some kind of magic trick and produced a chocolate bar from behind his back. I always admired him after that, it was just a shame that he was always so busy. Every few weeks I met up with a strange old man that taught me how to control my powers, I was actually doing some really cool stuff before he told me we had to stop. “But I can’t start flying properly yet.” “You will learn. You can fly perfectly well, it’s just the take off you need to practise.” “But why are we stopping?” The man I only knew as ‘K’ just looked at me and smiled. “It’s ok James, this isn’t the last time you’ll ever see me. Now close your eyes.” “Why?” “Do you trust me James?” “Yes of course.” “Well close your eyes then.” So I did, and after what seemed like several minutes of silence, I opened them, and he was gone. Grumpily I stormed down to my house and went up to my room without telling anybody what had happened. Mum had come knocking on my door telling me dinner was ready, but I wasn't hungry. I was extremely annoyed that the only thing I had to look forward to was now being wrenched away from me. Life had a habit of doing that to me. So now you know almost everything about me. I can tell you now, because it won’t come as so much of a surprise to you. I’m a superhero, and I have superpowers. |
