Another Superboy Jamie Story |
The Secret of the Myst – Part 6 When he awoke, Jamie, Wes and Greg, now dressed in their street clothes were seated at his bedside. Jamie smiled, “Welcome back to the land of the living, bro!” Robby asked, “How long was I out?” “`Bout three hours, Jamie answered.” “Where am I?” “In my bedroom. Mine and Maddie’s. That’s Maddie’s bed. I bunk up top. You OK now, Robby?” Robby sat up. “As well as can be expected I guess. Thanks for the help you guys.” Wes murmured, “We’re not spies, Robby. And YOU’RE not a freak.” Greggy agreed. “You’re not a freak, Robby. What you ARE is a super hero.” “Me?” Robby answered? “Naw. Not a hero. I’m just a total weirdo freakzoid.” Jamie was having none of that. “Don’t say that, Robby! Where did you get that from? You saved lives today. And it was obvious that you were scared to death of getting caught. But you didn’t let that stop you. You went ahead and did it. I don’t know what YOU call that, Robby. But where * I * come from, we call that ‘a hero!’” Maddie, who had joined the super boys’ vigil over Robby, interjected: “Yeah, a mysterious hero who does his healing thing and then vanishes in a fog… No! Not a fog… A mysterious hero who vanishes in a MIST! We should call him ‘Myst!’ Cuz he’s a mysterious, misty super hero!” Jamie, Wes and Greg agreed enthusiastically! Jamie clapped Maddie on his shoulder as he enthused. “Maddie! Yer a genius! That’s exactly what we’re gonna call him!” He grinned at Robby. “Face it dude. Yer a hero! And your super hero name is ‘Myst.’ Now all we need is to get Mom to make you a super hero costume!” Wes just stood in the corner, tapping his foot. He looked at the others with an expression of exasperation. He could not believe that Jamie, of all people, had forgotten about something so simple yet so important. “Jamie, did you forget that little ‘invention’ I came up with in the shop at the Fortress?' asked Wes. “Oh yeah, that costume machine” Jamie replied, absently. “Yeah that way we do not have to bother mom with that chore.” he replied. “Not to mention it will make THE costume for him” he continued. Robby listened as the two brothers bantered back and forth with one another. He felt a little more at ease with them. He decided to explain to his friends the reason for his initial apprehension about them. “Guys” Robby started. “Guys, it’s a good thing Wes has this costume machine, cuz there’s no way your mom or your dad can ever know the truth about me.” Robby then began to let the boys know what the deal was. His dad and Clark had been close friends since university. They’d been college dorm roommates their junior year at Metropolis University. It had been the Kents who had helped the McClouds find their house on Hyperion Way. He explained to them that his father detested and feared all mutants and aliens. He could not afford to put Clark and Lois in the position of knowing about his secret. Even knowing how Rob’s dad hates aliens and mutants, close as they are, Clark might feel morally obliged to Rob’s dad that his son is a mutant. Rob had no intention of facing Clark with such a moral dilemma. “Guys, my parents cannot find out” he said pleadingly “And yeah, I figured out that your dad is Superman,” Robby added matter-of-factly. The boys were not surprised at this revelation. It only would make sense that two super powered brothers, whose power mimicked Superman's, would be his sons. “Guys, I can’t put him in the position to hafta lie for me,” he exclaimed “My father cannot and must not find out about me. I’d hafta KILL myself!” Jamie, Wes and Maddie all three were aback. Wes could read Robby’s thoughts and he could tell the boy was deadly serious. Telepathically, he flashed that confirmation to his brothers. “He’s serious guys. If Mom and Dad find out, we’d hafta hold a 24/7 suicide watch on Robby to keep him alive.” Solemnly, Jamie reassured his friend. “Rob, I told you we’re not gonna hurt you, bro, and that we were here to help. Your secret is safe with us.” “Well if we are going to get this under way, we need to get to the fortress” Wes interjected. “OH Can I go Wes?” asked Maddie with excitement. “No lil bro, you gotta stay here in case mom asks where we went, so you can tell her” Wes replied. “Yeah you know mom does not let us take you to the Fortress without daddy,” Jamie added. Maddie looked down at his shoes with a dejected look upon his cherub like face. “K....I guess so” he said sadly. “I can teleport the three of us there instantly, guys,” Robby mentioned “Not so fast mister, you passed out the last time you did that,” Jamie said. He stepped over to his desk. He pulled a metallic box out of one of the side drawers and opened it. Inside the box was a highly polished silvery ring. The ring was emblazoned with the pentagon shaped “Superman” shield. But within the shield appeared not the familiar “S,” but a figure “8.” Jamie drew the ring out of the box and handed it to Robby. “Here put this on,” instructed Jamie. Robby slipped the ring onto his finger. It automatically resized itself to fit perfectly. Jamie explained. “Robby, right now a substantial percentage of my powers have flowed into your body. We’re both human and it just so happens; a human body is an ideal receptor of the sun’s energy. Because you’re a Terran, your cells cannot process solar energy into super powers the way Zyrtonians and Kryptonians and some races from other plants can. But, with this ring, that all changes. MY body processes enough solar energy for both of us. And the ring on my finger transmits some of that power to your ring and your ring infuses your body with it. Robby, as long as you’re wearing that ring and are in line of sight with Wes or Greggy or me, your powers will never over tax you. You’ll be tapped into a limitless power source.” “Wow! You mean, I’ll be super strong and I’ll be able to fly?” Asked Robby. “Yes, as long as you’re in line of sight with one of us super guys and we’re all wearing these rings. “We have never used the rings on a mutant before, so I am not sure of some other effects. Robby looked at Jamie. His eyes shifted from bright emerald green to Onyx black. He peered into Jamie's mind to retrieve their destination. It took Robby only a split second to learn what he needed to know. “OK Guys ready?” he asked as he took Wes and Jamie’s hands. He winked at Maddie and murmured, “G’bye lil bro, we're OUTTA HERE!!!” Rob, Jamie and Wes vanished in a mist. |
