I always reach for a theology
that leans wide and deep into suffering,
a mournful spiritual sung to me
to wash away what pain this life might bring.
As a child, my mama comforted me
with quiet music on the radio.
Her recitations of the rosary
linger to this day, a fragrant echo.
I abandoned God in my teenage years,
felt an entitlement to sing the blues.
But, He found a passageway through my tears,
in the end, we are not the ones who choose.
And now, I labor still to keep my soul
vibrating with grace, harmonized and whole.
Live each season as it passes.
~ Henry David Thoreau
