Never give your heart
to a horse.
Give her your hands,
your feet, your hours,
your fears.
Give her your balance,
your seat, your songs,
your tears.
Never give your life
to a horse.
Give her compassion
and admiration,
your secrets, your time.
Give her your best seat,
your toil, your dime.
Comb her tail, plait
her mane, oil her tack,
but never give your heart,
your life, to her big
brown eyes; they will
swallow you whole
and take your heart and
leave you without a soul.
