In the final moments, could you appreciate The chasm your exit would ruthlessly score Into our hearts? Shopping mall parking lot; An unfitting terminal for such a true and Compassionate soul to depart. Were you dwarfed by jangling red rage In the heart of your assassin Or was it most terrifying - his sinister calm? Electrical cords taut Around your pale, slender neck; surrounding flesh So offended, the mortician obliged To employ concealing scarves. Were you abraded by rough carpet, Bruised by the spare As he dropped you into the trunk Of the car, Or were you by then departed? Broken nails, lacerations attest to your struggle, Your panic; your final thoughts, A prayer? This could not have been at the hands of an enemy; None existed. Your gentle demeanor Held comfort for us all and we came In record numbers; Standing-room only at the church Where we endured, bereft, Lacking reason, To uncharitably covet a retribution That would never be. Henry Lee Lucas held promise; We cursed him. But, he was killing others, states away. Investigations, public and private Rendered no scrap of information, no suggestion Of motive, No hope. If God failed to answer When you cried out in the darkness, Where might I Reach him now? An ignoble and callous end To our dear alliance; I remain, plagued by questions and The lingering pain.
