We have roamed throughout the woods following
The sorry little path that continues
On from the lovely garden path that runs
Alongside the apple orchard into
The pasture and the oak-forest beyond.
I don’t know why we haven’t tried before,
It’s not as if it’s scary looking or
It’s so terribly long that we couldn’t try
(or at least we hope, ‘cause we’ve never been
even as far as the little trickle
of the stream we hopped across way back there).
This time we brought dinner in our backpacks,
As well as lots of water and our tents
So that we don’t have to stop if night falls…
Sunlight streaming into the canopy
Highlighting the suspended motes of dust.
Brightest right before they all disappear
With the disappearance of the sunlight.
Dust motes are replaced with rising embers
As we gather around our growing fire.
Our thought’s mirrored in the flickering glow.
Silently staring at the quick motion
Of the fire’s personal Terpsichore.
