Jeremy needed proof. Was he ready for the truth? Written for 12/21/07 Daily Flash Fiction.
"My what?"

"Your card key, man."

Jeremy gave the plastic hotel key to Luke. He watched his friend insert the card between the jamb, a few inches from the door knob, and slide it downward. "I saw this in a movie once."

This is nuts, thought Jeremy. For a moment, he considered walking away. There's no reason not to trust her, right? But he also couldn't ignore the signs--the unreturned voicemails, the unanswered texts. He heard a click and turned in time to watch his smiling friend slowly opening the door. "Holy shit! It worked?"

Luke rose and placed a hand on his buddy's arm. "Hey, are you sure you want to know?"

"I don't know," sighed Jeremy, as he pushed through the door. He turned on the lights and surveyed his girlfriend's dorm room. It was easy to tell which area was Connie's and which was her roommate's. He sat on the unmade bed, absentmindedly ran his hand through a pile of clothes, and saw the bulletin board filled with pictures. He walked over to it and a smile flew across his face as he pored over a dozen images of he and Connie.

His eyes stopped dead on one particular photograph. In it was his beautiful girlfriend, laughing, her silk blouse partially unbuttoned, straddling the lap of a man he knew quite well. He felt his blood rush to his face as he saw pictures of Connie and the same man in one amorous scene after another.

"Luke?" Jeremy almost choked on the name as he turned toward the door.

His friend smirked. "Remember that day at the airport when you asked me to take care of Connie while you were gone? Well, I'm doing just that. What more can you ask for from a friend?"
