Why I Write

“What do you do these days?”
“I’m a writer”, I reply,
“But I’ve never seen
your name in print…”
My eyes are lowered:
Nor have I…

        The respect dies
        From her narrowing eyes
        “Unpublished?” Like a
        half-boiled egg?
        A hideous
        newborn rat?

I’m a writer, I murmur,
It’s what I do.
Being successful is not
a part of the name.

          Living out
          the song in my heart,
          Pursuing my distant star,
          I’m a writer, and simply put
          I write.
          It’s who I am.
