Using Adjectives and Adverbs

1. No, I was not surprised that I use so many adjectives and adverbs. I have always known that I do this. I wrote a piece that was over 3000 words. Due to reviews, I narrowed it down considerably and due to reviews, continued to hack away at it. Today it is around 1500 words and I think it will be the first piece I tackle after this class is over. But, knowing I do these things and not having the tools or knowledge to really do a fair edit are two different ends of the toothpick. I feel that since I have taken this class I will be able to better edit my work. At least I hope that I will. I think that after I have "completed" a piece, that is when the knife should come out and start its work. The one thing I have learned that sticks out to me is that reaching for different VERBs is a real key. If you choose the correct verb, it can convey your meaning in one word in stead of fifteen flowery, descriptive words. So, yes ,I will be more aware when I make it a point of doing so. These will not flow from me unbidden. In the words of George W. Bush, "This is hard work......really hard work."

2. If I ever disagreed with any of the NO adverb idea, I have chunked it. I believe that from now on I will use the find -ly and rewrite automatically. The adjective article I have to agree with also, but I am not as convinced that adjectives are as evil as adverbs. As I did discover in doing this lesson, choosing the stronger verbs is the key. I am glad that statement about grammarians was made. At least it give me a reason for my love affair. I did go back and remove all but one adverb, although I have to trust the piece is better for it. The reading said we could have one for 300 words. In conclusion,

I do think that it might be dull reading with no adverbs or adjectives. How do you make something concrete without trying to describe any noun. This is going to be a very hard thing for me to do. I love some of the descriptions I read and they use adjectives.

In Conclusion, I must quit relying on adjective and adverbs in my work as it apparently is the lazy man's path. I bet it is the reason some stories have been rejected by publishers. I believe I can state that anyone who wishes to disagree with these ideas, is lazy, not open to suggestion, and not attempting to be a better writer. Let them thrash about in their ignorance. There is no way in @#$% they will become published writers. You can take that to the bank. I will try my best to believe all this especially about the adverbs. That many successful writers can't be wrong.
