Practice for my novel-in-progress, trying out present-tense narration and writing action.
“Cowgirl” Mary Hall takes a deep breath and rolls her head from side to side quickly as the twanging steel guitar of her entrance music starts to play on the house speakers. The tall busty blonde, wearing a dark blue one-piece swimsuit, sweeps the curtain to one side and starts to stride purposefully toward the ring in the center of the arena. She shrugs off the fans that reach out toward her. Most of the extended hands show her just the one finger, which is the way she likes it.
“This feature match is a title match for the RCW Women’s Championship!” the ring announcer says. “Now approaching the ring, hailing from Saginaw, Texas and weighing in at 199 pounds…’Cowgirl’ Mary Hall!” The small crowd boos half-heartedly. It isn’t so much indifference toward the established heel as it is lethargy, as this is the first match after the intermission and a good part of the audience is still making their way back toward their seats.
Mary stops in the ringside area and mugs for the video camera wielded by Lindsay Banks. “I am going to break her in two, and I am going to take what’s mine!” she yells before turning to the ring steps. She climbs the wooden stairs easily and ducks between the top and second ropes, then crosses over and bounces off the far ropes once or twice to limber up.
She frowns as a mariachi tune starts to play and the ring announcer goes on to introduce her opponent. “And now, your reigning and defending RCW Women’s Champion! She weighs in at 135 pounds, from Acapulco, Mexico…La Reyna Jaguar!”
Reyna trots toward the ring, slapping the fan’s hands, a grin evident even through the unique fur mask that she wears to the ring. The mask sports a jaguar-spotted pattern, as does the velvet swimsuit and fur-covered boots that constitute her ring attire.
Mary tugs on the ropes and watches her opponent carefully while Reyna climbs the steps. As the women’s champion turns and waves to the fans one last time, Mary starts to edge her way across the ring.
When Reyna starts to step between the ropes into the ring, Mary charges over and slams a forearm into her back. Two more clubbing blows drive Reyna to her knees in the ring, and the referee wedges himself between the two women and moves Mary away, as the opening bell has not yet rung.
Reyna removes the championship belt from her waist and hands it to the referee, who slides it under the ropes to the timekeeper while keeping his body between them. As soon as the timekeeper returns to his seat, the referee points at him and the timekeeper rings the bell to officially start the match.
Now that the contest is officially underway, the two women circle each other before locking up in a collar-and-elbow position. The taller and more powerful challenger pushes Reyna back into the corner, and the referee begins to count; Mary has until the count of five to break the hold before risking disqualification. She releases her opponent at the count of four, then slaps the champion across the face before retreating to the center of the ring.
Reyna glowers at her opponent and lifts one hand to her face. She cautiously approaches her challenger, then lifts one hand and waggles her fingers to indicate that she desires a test of strength. Mary grins and lifts her hand as well, then stands up straight with her hand as high as she can reach to mock the height advantage that she has.
Reyna grumbles and reaches as high as she can, then delivers a forearm blow to Mary’s head. As Mary stumbles back, Reyna kicks at her knee. A couple more well-placed kicks bring Mary to the mat.
Reyna grabs Mary’s foot and drops an elbow on the inside of the same knee three times, then grabs the foot again and starts to spin into the Figure-Four Leglock, her finishing maneuver. Mary gets her other foot up and pushes Reyna off before she can sink it in, however, and rolls outside the ring to the floor to try to recover.
La Reyna Jaguar stands in the middle of the ring while the referee starts to administer the ten-count. Mary gets to her feet at the count of three, favoring the leg that Reyna had been working on, and rolls back into the ring at the count of nine. She immediately rolls back out again, as she has broken the referee’s count, and walks around the ringside area trying to shake off the effects of Reyna’s elbow-drops on her knee.
The champion follows the blonde out into the ringside area and kicks at the back of her now-weakened knee, knocking her off her feet. As Mary gets back to her feet, Reyna kicks at her again before grabbing her by the arm and rolling her back under the ropes, barely making it back into the ring herself before the referee reaches the count of ten.
Reyna then pulls Mary back into the center of the ring and starts to spin into the figure-four, but Mary grabs her head and pulls her down into a small-package cradle. Reyna easily kicks out at the count of one, however, and even through the mask the surprise and frustration is evident.
Mary starts to climb to her feet, as Reyna punches at her with little, if any effect. When Mary gets to her feet, Reyna connects with a perfectly-placed dropkick to the chest, which knocks the challenger back into the turnbuckle. Reyna then follows up with a flying headscissors to bring Mary out of the corner.
As Mary lies in the center of the ring, Reyna runs up the turnbuckle and turns around, then launches herself into a splash attempt onto the prone challenger. Mary rolls out of the way, however, and Reyna lands chest-first onto the mat.
Mary climbs quickly to her feet and drops a quick series of elbows onto the small of Reyna’s back, throwing a couple of kicks in for good measure. She then reaches down and pulls Reyna up by the mask and throws her into the ropes, scooping her up and body-slamming her to the mat. Mary attempts a quick pin, but only succeeds in getting a long two-count. Mary slaps the mat with both hands in frustration and looks up at the referee, holding up three fingers. The referee shakes his head and holds up two, and indicates that Reyna got her shoulder up before he could count to three.
Mary then gets to her feet and pulls Reyna back up again, and tosses her into the ropes. Mary attempts a clothesline, but Reyna ducks under the arm, bounces off the ropes, and attempts to counter with a crossbody block. Mary catches the much lighter woman, shakes her head, and bodyslams her again. She then goes in for another pin attempt, with the same result. The blonde then punches Reyna in the head, but stops when the referee begins his five-count.
Mary then pulls Reyna to her feet again and once more launches her into the ropes. This time, however, Reyna grabs onto the top rope. Mary then charges in and connects with a clothesline that drives Reyna over the ropes and onto the arena floor. She manages to land on her feet, though, and grabs Mary’s feet and takes her down. Reyna pulls Mary’s leg over the ring apron and slams the back of her leg onto the edge a couple of times to soften it up. Reyna then slides back into the ring and reaches for Mary, but Mary drops out onto the floor and tries to shake off the effects again.
As the referee begins his count on Mary, Reyna leaves the ring again. This time, however, Mary is ready for her and grabs her in a bear-hug, then drives her back-first into the ring post before rolling her back into the ring.
Mary follows the champion back in and attempts another cover, but Reyna gets her shoulder off the mat with scant inches to spare before the three-count. Mary glares at the referee as she pulls Reyna to her feet, grabs the champion in another bear-hug, and carries her to the corner of the ring. Setting her against the turnbuckle, she starts to drive her shoulder into Reyna’s midsection. When the referee’s count reaches four, Mary backs off with her hands in the air, but then she kicks Reyna in the ribs. The referee admonishes Mary, finger wagging in her face, but she simply smirks as she reaches for Reyna.
She then whips Reyna into the ropes, crouches for a split second, then launches herself into the air and spears the champion. Mary then covers Reyna and hooks her leg as the referee makes the three-count.
Mary jumps into the air as the referee calls for the bell and goes over to retrieve the Women’s Championship belt. As he hands it to Mary, the ring announcer makes the call. “Your winner, and the new RCW Women’s Champion, ‘Cowgirl’ Mary Hall!”
Mary grabs the belt out of the referee’s hand and holds it up as she turns in place, then goes over to where Reyna is laying on the mat, her arms wrapped tightly around herself in apparent pain, and plants a couple of boots into her ribs before leaving the ring. Mary backs up the entranceway, belt held high, and ignores the boos and catcalls raining down on her from the crowd.
