I went to pick up the phone today.
To you, I had something to say.
I started to dial your number, then I remembered you
            have gone away
To your eternal rest to stay


I went to pick up the phone today.
To you, I had something to say.
I dialed your number and got a recording: "This number is no
  longer in service.  Please check the number and dial again."
I remembered then.


I went to pick up the phone today.
To you, I had something to say.
I had some good news to share.
After six rings,  I realized you are no longer there.
