A lament about love that burned itself out much too quickly.

If Only.......

If only I had bit my tongue,
If only I had kept things light,
If only your heart I'd won,
Before I shared my own that night.......

If only you had cared enough,
If only you had understood,
If only this weren't so tough,
Together, maybe we could
Have been together still.

If only......what powerful words.
But not enough to heal this rift,
If only these words were wood and nails,
I'd build a bridge and stop this drift
That puts ever more distance between us.

If only you were here again,
To touch my face, whisper my name.
If only I could hold you close,
Just one more time, bring back the flame
Of passion that is mine no more--
At least not one I share with you.
