Jason wanted to know if Grandpa's basement is truely haunted.
All his life Jason had been told that Grandpa's basement was haunted. Everytime they would go for a visit to the farm, his older brother Dave would dare him to go down there by himself. Not once did Jason go, but then never did Dave and he was three years older. Maybe there was something to what Dave was talking about.

Finally when Jason turned 12, he decide that he would check out the basement. After all he was grown up now and no longer the little boy Dave always called him. Finally the day arrived they would go visit the farm again and Jason was ready.

In his backpack was a flashlight and extra batteries, length of rope, bottle of water, a few candy bars and the old broken jack knife Grandpa had given him for protection.

Jason waited until everyone was out of the house before he opened up the basement door. Turning on the flashlight he started down the steps into the darkness. He could not see more then a few feet in front of him. The steps were slippery and damp. He could hear the sound of dripping water and he shivered.

The Basement was big. Jason could not see the otherside and it was old. Maybe even older then Grandpa. The floor was not the cement like his own basement at home. It was made from stones. Little ones and big ones and very uneven. He stumbled and almost fell. He grabbed an old box to steady himself and jerked his hand back when something crawled over it.

Now he was a little scared. It meant something was down here besides himself and Jason was not a fan of Bugs or Cobwebs . The cobwebs were moving back and forth on a gentle breeze making shadows every where in the flashlight.

Jason moved around a pile of stuff in the middle of the floor and saw a closed door. Should he open it? Was there a Monster behind it or a treasure room? The door knob was coverd in dust and more cobwebs. Yuk ! He would have to touch them to turn the knob. He brushed them off and wiped his hand on his jeans.

Squeeky hindges sent shivers down his spin. Opening the door he jumped back incase there was a Monster in there. Nope, no Monster or Treasure just Grandma's Preserves and her tomatoes, green beans , peas and fruit.

Jason heard footsteps and rattling pipes above his head. Someone was coming closer and his eyes got big. The basement door opened and footsteps came down in the dark. Who was it? Suddenly the lights came on and there was Grandpa. He was safe.

" What you doing down here boy? Did Dave tell you this place was haunted? That was a story I told him to keep him out of mischief and out of his Grandma's preserves. That boy does love to eat. Come on, Boy. Let's go outside and play on the tire swing."
