Flash fiction about a lesson learned. |
“Don’t say I didn't warn you,” she scolded, “when this comes around to bite you.” Jonathan gave his wife a sideways glance as he removed the last cap and pushed a pen into the valve…pssss. “You worry too much. It’s dark out. Who’s to see? Besides, the jerk had it coming. He saw me waiting for this spot and pulled in anyway.” “Jon, your language in front of JJ.” “He’s six. I’m sure he’s heard jerk before.” He finished, got in the car, and parked on the other side of the parking lot. Later, back at their car, he pointed at the tires. “See,” he remarked, “you worry too much.” The next day, Jonathan leaned out the front door and yelled, “Junior!. Put your bike away and get in the car. We have to go meet your mother.” By the time he made it to his car JJ was already in his booster with the seat belt fastened. “All buckled?” he asked rhetorically, backing up the car. Thump, thump. “What…?” He put the car in park, jumped out and examined his tires; all were flat. That jerk must have followed us home! He opened the door and unbuckled his son’s seat belt, looking around warily. Come on, let’s get you in the house.” “What’s wrong, Daddy?” “Nothing. It’s ok. I think that guy from last night flattened our tires.” "Oh, he didn't do it.” Jonathan stopped and looked down at his son. “Did you see who did this?” “I did, Daddy, just like you.” “Just like me? JJ, why would you do that to Daddy’s tires?” “Because you parked in Mommy’s spot.” Oh, brother. “Ok, let’s get the pump. We don’t have to tell Mommy about this, right?” “I tell Mommy everything,” JJ said proudly. Jonathan shook his head in misery. (word count = 299).
