Written for the Daily Flash Fiction Challenge with a word limit of 300. The prompts: This story must contain the words: Star, Barrel and Horse Busted This isn’t working out exactly as I thought it would, thought young Bart Quickdraw. He’d planned the heist down to the last detail, or so he thought. Now he was standing there staring down the barrel of a gun; the loot still in his raised hands. There was no doubt that he’d be doing time. Not that doing time was something he feared. He’d spent most of his life in the Big House. He knew his way around. Keeping a low profile and being on your best behavior were sure ways to get out early. The big question of the moment was how did he get caught? He’d scouted the scene the day before. He saw the deposit being made. He knew the town’s folk took siestas in the afternoon. He’d even disguised himself as a sheriff by hanging a star on his shirt. No detail had been overlooked. There must have been a snitch. But who knew of his plan? Sally! She had to be the one. Only an hour ago he’d been bragging about his plan to her. She’d seem engrossed by his bravado and enthusiastic about sharing in the bounty. Bart let his head lean slightly to the left so he could see around the gun barrel and out through the door and into the street. There was Sally. She had a smug look on her face. It was as if she was enjoying the fact that he was in big trouble. To make matters worse – she was standing there petting his horse, Puddles He snarled at her. She stuck out her tongue. “Put the cookies back and go to your room until dinner!” said Mom, pointing a wooden spoon at him. Sisters are evil, he thought as he headed towards at least an hour of solitary. Word Count 300 |
