The Rush

The corners of his grey eyes sagged as if they frowned. On his lips he wore a smile while he walked home from his long day at school. Every day seems to be getting longer. He ditched his final period today, yet it still felt longer than yesterday.  The gentle breeze blew his brown hair over his eyes; safe. Where is your smile? My eyes are hiding. Don’t lose control. I have practiced in front of a mirror enough. It’s not habit. Maybe not yet, shiny, what is that? Don’t lose focus, smile.

He picked this route home only because there were benches every few miles. He sat on the first bench and pulled out a square cigarette box. His thumb slid the box open, four cigs. Who’s purple lighter? After replacing the lighter in the container and that in his chest pocket, he took a drag. Usually he liked to sit on every other bench; if he was enjoying the thought when he passed a bench he might skip two or three before he sat to smoke. Drag.

This morning he had every intention to ride the bus or catch a ride with someone who lived near his block. Halfway through his cigarette a granny whose white hair swung with her hips as she got her daily exercise asked, “How old are you boy?” He ignored her, didn’t even look up from his shoes as she reached the edge of the bench. Her step slowed and he could feel her gaze linger on the top of his head as she smirked, “That will kill you.” When she passed the bench her legs picked up the pace, briskly she returned to her speed walk.

Another drag; he looked up, at clouds. Why do the clouds block my view, his favorite color was blue. Any hue, from the grey touching the horizon that reminded him of his eyes, to the darkest blue he felt could almost be swum through. Another drag.

The approaching car slowed, a head poked out, the voice yelled, “That’ll kill you kid!” Another drag, he tasted fibers and flicked the filter at the car. It landed in the strip of grass between the bench and the sidewalk. He bent over, picked it up, stood and knocked the cherry into the street. He put the filter in his pocket along with a gum wrapper that lay next to it.

Moderated Release

With this absolute freeing of moderated release.

Balancing inscribed flesh and found castles in the sky.

One more, let us stay warm.

Blade cold.

Emotional tides a bug’s equilibrium.

Calf? Wrist?

Whispers, music to the ears.

Lifted from the ground placed in the heart.

What do you want?

You know what I want.

Lost in the need to be.

I love her.

Have you not learned.

Caught in a need to please

Shut up!

You know you want one more.

This cold once more ignored

Forgotten

Standing lost and Forgotten.

Innocence to tears, my elevated fears.

do you care?

Once my blood, now my blood rotten,

brother, the very word burns taste buds from my tongue.

Salty pains, standing in the rain, Forgotten.

All I could do was stare,

As I watched you throw away,

everything for which you used to care.

My soul you have eaten.

Our ashes still yearning, helping hands,

here we stand Forgotten.

Traversing this maze, do we dare

Continue this daze of lost hopes, wishing

That you can care.

Acid on my face, burning tongue,

Raging veins searching for blood,

I will not be the Forgotten,

Waiting, for you to care.
