a little children's fantasy about a monkey that can do something no other monkey can. |
Telly and Us ![]() The short version By Lisa Noe ![]() There was a little clubhouse in the woods where the children liked to meet each day after School. The boys and girls in the neighborhood all got along well together. There were five children in all, two girls and three boys. The girls were named Sahara and Nicole And the boys were named; Danny, Johnny, and David. One day after school, the children were walking towards their fort, when they noticed the door flung open and it was swaying in the wind. “Who’s the wise-guy that left the door open?” asked Danny. “Not me!” The girls said in unison. “Don’t look at me,” said Johnny. “Well I sure don’t want to get blamed for it,” said David. “Well some one left it open because it is about off it’s hinges.” Danny said. The children kept walking toward the clubhouse while they talked. When they arrived they were amazed by what they found. The entire clubhouse on the inside was in total disarray. The friends stepped inside to see what happened to their beloved clubhouse. All of a sudden a under the garbage and articles on the floor something moved. The girls screamed! The boys also let out a holler. It jumped from the floor on to one of the children, Johnny, knocking him to the ground, the kids didn’t know what had them the girls ran out side of the clubhouse. Within a second or two things began to calm enough for the children to see that what had knocked Johnny down and had broken in to their fort was a chimpanzee monkey. The monkey calmed down when he saw the children were not going to hurt him. The monkey had learned to talk in a very special side show carnival that traveled around the country, however the keeper of the animals was a cruel master and hurt the monkey and threatened to harm the ape’s mother. The children talked to the monkey and found out that it’s name was Telly and the mean circus master took his mother and sold her, Telly escaped trying to find her mother. Two of the boys went to the grocery store at the corner for some bananas. I t was a hard thing for the children to keep the monkey calm. “I wish to find my mother, I heard the master say that he sold her to a Zoo,” Telly said. “I am surely hungry I’ve not ate in a day or so,” She added. ‘The boys ought to be back any minute with you some nice bananas,” said Sahara. “yeah, I know where the zoo is but I don’t know how we are going to get a monkey there, it is too far to walk and none of us know how to drive yet,” said Johnny. “Here they are with the food, Hey guys we need to put our heads together and figure how we will get Telly to be with her mother.” Said Danny “How about we call someone and tell them about the situation and perhaps they will help us,” said Nicole. That won’t work Nicole they find out that monkey can talk and they’ll run all those experiments with her, she’ll be miserable, just as bad as being with the circus master,” said Tommy. “I know,” said a smug and confident Sahara, “We can dress her up in a dress and a hat and some sunglasses and all that and take a taxi to the zoo.” “hay that’s an idea,” said Nicole “Yeah well where we gonna get the money to call a taxi?” Said Johnny. The children each put their money together and counted that they had $14.50. They saw the bus go up the road it was a convoy of trucks and vehicles they knew that was the circus master. They were afraid so they took Telly to one of their homes. “Thank you for doing this to help me You shall all be blessed from now on.” Later they gave Telly some Honey and bananas to eat and then they dressed her up Like a little cowgirl, it was a Halloween costume that had belonged to Nicole. It fit Telly just right. The children called a taxi and when it arrived they all surrounded Telly, keeping her in the middle of them so the driver could not see her up close. No one would ever expect that this was an ape because she talked so well. When they arrived at the Zoo the kids realized they had no money to get in because they spent all their money on the taxi. So they decided they would have to sneak in. They waited for about 20 minutes and the way was clear so they entered sight unseen. They now had to find the Apes. Telly began singing a song, a beautiful lullaby, that her mother used to comfort her with In years past. As she sang the song the apes started going nuts, jumping up and down in their cages throwing food and acting as if Telly were something from outerspace. However one ape in the corner swayed back and forth she ran to the cage and placed her hands around the bars. Telly touched her mother’s hand, the two of them had tears in their eyes. “How are we going to free my mother,” Telly asked. “We have to think on it,” said Johnny. “ Lets go get some french fries and a drink and think about it.” “We could say that she is sick and needs to be checked by a Vet.” Said Tommy “No that’s stupid you lame brain,” Danny said. “Well what would you suggest, Tommy quipped. “I know.” said Telly, “when they go to feed the apes, I could show myself when they open my mother’s door to feed her, she could run out and the two of us can be free.” That’s a good plan Telly but there is only one problem how are we going to get you guys out of the zoo and find you some place safe,” Sahara said. “My Older brother is in college, he has a van and he owes me big because I didn’t tell his girlfriend a secret about him. I’ll call him and we can heard you girls into the van,” said Nicole. “Wow that sounds perfect,” said Danny. Paul is the new addition to the group, he is a 18 year old college student and he is an animal lover, besides who wouldn’t want to meet a talking monkey. He met the kids inside at the concession stand and they introduced him and he was blown away. “So what is the plan?” asked Paul “They’ll run out when the food is brought to them, Then Telly will push the feeder into the cage locking the door and she and her mother will run and get in the van and we will get out of here.” “Where are we going to be taking them, I have to know where I’ll be driving?” asked Paul we’ll take the to the forest beyond the city where no one ventures. That way they can have their freedom, Said Sahara. The children all got inside of the van and Paul was parked very near the apes cages so they would only travel a short distance. Sure enough the monkey and the kids pulled it off… When the man opened the door to bring Telly’s mother her food the apes, both Telly and her mother pushed the feeder into the cage where Telly’s mother had been held separately From the rest of the apes. The two of the ran and jumped into the van and they sped off. They drove for about an hour and they came to a large forest full of fat green trees and They each said a sad fair well to their little friend Telly and her mother. “Telly we feel as if we have been chosen for this and that it is something we are proud to have been a part of. I want you to know,” Nicole could not contain the tears, “I will never forget you and I will remember your lullaby forever.” “Me too, I wanted to say I love you and you have a good life here in these woods,” said Sahara. “Ok we better wrap this up, they’ll be looking for my van everywhere.” “You have all been my friends and I shall never forget the friends who returned me to my mother and gave us our freedom. I shall never talk again, I’ll have no use for it. But when I needed it I figured it out.” I guess I’m smarter than the average ape,” said Telly with a big grin on her face. “So good by to you my friends and thank you.” The kids loaded up in the van and Paul brought them back to their fort where it all started; their adventure with a talking ape. As they look around their fort at the banana peels and the clothes they tried on the monkey. They felt happy because they knew Telly and her mother could now be happy. The End Word Count: 1535 |
