The story of tragedy striking down on a young couple. |
My First and Last Heartbreak This all started a week before prom. Every senior and junior was finding their dates to go with. I, on the other hand, was focusing on school. Okay, I lied. Ever since 9th grade, I, a senior student, have been almost a complete outcast. My circle has been very small, and I’m talking like three to five people. Not only did I have few friends, but I have been a hermit crab in its shell. I rarely socialized with these so called friends. To be honest, none of this really fazed me. My goals were set and so were my educational plans. I’m just ready to leave this school. Since it was my final year at this school, I might as well attend prom. What the heck, I might as well ask a girl too. The problem now is who do I ask and how many rejections I will receive. Even if I’m unpopular, there has to be at least one female that would accept my invitation. (Sigh)I whispered to myself “Here goes nothing.”, and then I went on an adventure to find a girl to ask to come with me to prom. As I am walking in the lunchroom, my eyes locked onto this random girl sitting alone at a table doing what looks like homework. I had no clue why she was sitting alone because attractive was an understatement for her. Her skin was lightly tanned. Her hair was long and colored a medium brown. I swear her eyes sparkled every time she blinked. The expressions of confusion she made were super cute and I mean really really cute, like a dog looking at you while it is tilting its head. This is the part where I grow a pair. I slowly advanced to her with a casual and normal look on my face. Oh shit. I stopped for a moment to realize that I might creep her out if I just walked up to her randomly. I had to play it cool. I grabbed my wallet and pulled out a dollar bill. Looking for the nearest water vending machine I quickly found a vending machine and exchanged the dollar for a cold bottle of water. Alright, now I am ready. As I approached the girl, I asked her “May I sit here?” With a big smile on her face, she said “Sure!” So I took a seat next to her. It was so uncomfortable sitting next to this girl. The main reason why was because of the endless pairs of eyes that stared at me. I was almost sure that their laser beam like eyes could disintegrate me. Before I began a conversation with this girl I looked at her face for few seconds. Confusion completely filled her face. If this scene was a cartoon, her eyes would have been replaced with question marks. I looked at the point of her pencil to see which question it was pointed to. My eyes were met with a math problem. Luckily, I was pretty good at math. I started to help by saying “Hey, do you need help with that?” She replied with “Oh you don’t have to help. I’m just trying to solve this equation, but thanks for the offer”. Unconvinced, I urged on to help her. “I don’t mind helping if you don’t mind”. I said with a small smile on my face. She looks at me with a slightly bigger smile. “If you don’t mind, then I won’t mind”. So I proceeded telling her the steps that were needed to solve the problem. She followed my instructions flawlessly. “Wow! I finally understand how to solve those types of problems! Thank you!” she said. Her voice was filled with excitement. I replied with “No problem”. That kind of melted my heart a bit. “If you don’t mind me asking, may I ask why you’re sitting alone at this table?” I asked. She replied with “My friends decided to skip school today to go to the beach for the weekend. I was invited, but I wanted to stay in school so I can continue studying. College requires a lot of knowledge you know”. So this girl is in the middle of executing her educational plans. “What career do you plan on pursuing when you graduate from this school?” I asked. “Hmm… I hope that I could become an Anesthesiologist Assistant. I really want to help people but I don’t think I can deal with making incisions and performing critical operations”. she said. Wow. I never thought she would share the same job interest as me. Her words literally matched the reason why I am trying to become an Anesthesiologist Assistant. I replied back with excitement. “Really? Same here! That was exactly the reason why I chose to pursue the Anesthesiologist Assistant career”. For some reason we both laughed out loud for a good minute. I am pretty sure we brought a lot of attention to our table. “Phew. All that laughing made me thirsty. I'm going to grab a water bottle from the vending machine so be right back”. Before she could leave, I asked her if she wanted mine. She replied with “Oh no I couldn’t. You paid for it so I can’t take it”. “Don’t worry about it. After all, it was my fault that made you parched”. I said. She accepted the offer and thanked me. “I forgot to introduce myself, but my name is Brian. Nice to meet you!” “My name is Katherine! Nice to meet you too! Oh and by the way Katherine is spelled with a K at the beginning”. I replied with a small smile on my face ”Hmm… Never have I seen Katherine spelled with a K before. You must be a one of a kind”. I’m sure she blushed a bit because her cheeks turned a rose pink after I said that and she had a smile on her face. “So Katherine, are you free next weekend?” I asked. "I think so. Why?” she said. “Well prom is next weekend and well... “ Before I could finish she asks “So you want me to accompany you to prom this weekend?” with a grin on her face. “Yes. So uhmm... would you be so kind and polite to accompany me to prom this year?” I ask curiously. What felt like an eternity was a minute of silence before she replied with “I would love to attend prom by your side”. I am astonished by her answer. I was certain that I was about to get rejected since she did not know me, but she didn’t. Excitement and joy overwhelmed my body. I quickly asked her for her number. She writes it down on a piece of paper and hands it to me. Before I get the chance to take my phone out the bell rings. “Well I got to get to class. I’ll see you later! Don’t forget to text me!” she says as she is packing her stuff. She waves to me goodbye and sends me a quick wink with her dark brown eyes. The rest of the school day was spent with me reminiscing about her. Right when school was over for the week, I drove straight home and entered her number into my phone. Now there were four contacts in my phone, including mine, mom’s, dad’s and Katherine’s. I hesitated to send her a text. I told myself “Should I wait or do I text her now?” With my hands shaking, I decided to send her a text explaining that this number was mine. Not even a minute passed before she responded. I texted her to see if tomorrow was an okay date to go shopping for prom and she responded with an okay with three Ys at the end followed by an address to her house. I marked my Victoria’s Secret model calendar. The only dates that were marked were the day of prom and tomorrow. Today was the day that I finish my homework early and the day I make a new friend that would go to prom with me. The very next day I got dressed with nice clothes. I made sure I did all the essentials before grabbing my car keys. I entered my car, turned on the engine, set her address in my GPS, and tuned in some modern pop music on my radio. I reached her house and gathered myself together. “Alright, this is the first time going over to a girl’s house, so don’t freak out. We got this man”. I stepped out the car and reached the front door. Her house was a normal two story house. The garden on the other hand, was nice and neat. It complimented the light blue sky. I rung her doorbell. A moment later, a girl of pure beauty appeared in front of me. She was dressed in a red dress trimmed with black. Her heels were the same black as her dress. Her hair was the same as yesterday’s. Her face was even more gorgeous than ever, but that just might be my imagination.. That girl in front of me was the same Katherine that I had met yesterday. Behind her were her parents examining me to see if I was worthy enough to take their daughter shopping. A minute later, the father starts out with “Well you two have fun now! I can’t wait to see our young girl get ready for her first high school prom!” Katherine looks at her parents and shouts “Dad!” and then looks at her mom to find her with a grin and nodding her head in agreement. Katherine then says with a big smile on her face “Mom, Dad, this is Brian, my prom date”. I replied with “I’m delighted to make your acquaintances” before shaking both of her parents’ hands. “You keep my daughter safe and happy alright? Now go on and have fun you two!”. We both wave to them goodbye and I escorted her to the passenger side of my car. I opened her door and closed it for her like the gentleman I tried to be before entering the car through the driver door. We both waved back again and left her house to shop for prom. The two of us spent the whole time conversing and learning about one another. When we got to the mall we picked out our new outfits after visiting four stores. The rest of the time was spent walking around the mall while talking and visiting other stores. Before we left the mall, both of us got ice cream and sat at a table. Eating, conversing, laughing, and enjoying our youth. I bet we looked like an actual couple if someone took a picture and showed it to us. As we headed back home, the whole ride was met with dancing, singing, and laughter as we listened to all the pop songs on the radio. Man I wish this moment would last forever. We finally reached her house. Before I could exit the car to escort her back to her house, she whispered my name “Brian…” “What is it Katherine?” I said softly, looking at her. “I’m grateful and happy that we had the time to spend shopping together. Today was really fun a… an… and well…” before she finished, she closed her eyes and softly put her hands on my face and moved my lips to hers. Our lips connected, and they stayed connected for a good thirty seconds. My eyes closed, and my hands shifted their place onto her face. The feeling was almost indescribable. It felt like as if a bunch of fireworks exploded inside my heart. My surroundings started to spin. Everything around me was a blur. The only thing I could imagine was Katherine. What is this feeling? The thought of her made me feel a sensational heat throughout my entire body. As she slowly lets go of my face and lips, I let go of her’s. We both find ourselves looking at each other with a big, nice, and warm smile. I asked her “Are you ready?” She replies softly “Yes”. I exited out of the car from my side and opened up her door. I gently grasped her hand and walked her back to her front door. As we approached her door, we stopped for a moment, hand in hand. I started off by saying ”I guess this is where our adventure stops”. “Only for today, I hope to see you at school” she replied. We slowly transitioned from being hand in hand to holding each other in our arms. Her warmth traveled all throughout my body as if I jumped into a fresh and hot bath. I have never felt this emotion in my entire life until now. We let go of each other and I waved goodbye with a big smile on my face. She copies my actions and ten seconds later, I lost sight of her as she slips through the unlocked door of her house. I walked back to my car and drove back to my house. After changing and brushing my teeth, I got ready to go to bed. Laying on my bed, I grabbed my headphones and plugged it into my phone while I plugged my charger into my phone. I played my favorite calming playlist and slowly slipped into a mini comatose for the rest of the night. The only thing that came to mind was the girl I met Friday. That girl’s name was Katherine. For the rest of the week before prom, the two of us talked when we had the chance at school and we always exchanged texts when we had time. Of course, both of us couldn’t hang out because of the copious amount of homework we had received from our teachers. On the day of prom, I sent her a text reading “I’ll pick you up at 8:00 p.m.”. She replies back with agreement. I spent the whole day ironing the bright red shirt she picked out for me and got ready for prom. One by one, I equipped the pieces that would complete my tuxedo. I looked in the mirror and got approval from my inner conscious. The clock on the wall read 7:50 so I grabbed my keys, the corsage, and the boutonniere before I left the house. As I arrived at her house, I walked up to her front door and rung the doorbell. A minute later her parents arrived at the front door. With big smiles on their face, they greeted me and introduced me to the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The same girl walked down the stairs in her new, bright red dress with black trimmings. Her luscious brown hair was straightened out to perfection. Her face was as beautiful as ever. The bright red lipstick she applied on her sweet and soft lips complimented well with her dress. She finally reached the bottom of the stairs and greeted me with a hug and a kiss on the side of the cheek. She held out her arm and I applied the corsage onto her wrist. I gave her the boutonniere and she applied it onto the top buttonhole of my suit. She finished preparing and we locked arms and started to walk to the car. We sent our goodbyes to Katherine’s parents and I opened and closed the passenger door for her. I slid into my side of the car and we both drove off to prom. We conversed the whole time until suddenly a bunny attempts to cross the road. I slammed the brakes and swerved to safety. We both recovered and continued driving on for a minute until a big red transfer truck T-bones us on the passenger side. All I remember was the car rolling about three times before coming to a stop. I felt a sharp pain around my nasal area. I looked down to see blood dripping on my tuxedo. I tried to analyze what had just happened. I looked over to see Katherine with her head down and blood flowing from her head and arms. It took me a minute before I realized what had happened just now. I started to panic. My heart began to race. Adrenaline is being pumped throughout my veins. I unbuckled my seat-belt and I unbuckled Katherine’s. Miraculously, I picked her up by her legs and back and carried her out of the car. Blood was everywhere on her. Sharp pieces of the car glass was impaled all over her arms and body. I checked for a pulse on her neck. (Thump thump) Her pulse was still going. I tried to call out for her name, but I got no response. Shaking with fear of losing her, I tried to think of what I should do. I remembered seeing a hospital sign on the side of the road not too far from here. I quickly picked Katherine up in my arms and started to run straight for the hospital as quick as I could. The tears in my eyes started to roll on my face and drip onto Katherine’s face mixing in with the blood that was starting to stain her face. After a few minutes I saw the hospital sign. I increased my speed and ran straight for the hospital. Finally I reached the two big doors of the hospital and rushed in breathless, carrying the unconscious love of my life. Both of us were met with an emergency care team and I laid her on the stretcher they provided and they quickly rushed off to the emergency room. When I lost vision of her I dropped down to my knees and started crying with deep tears. Drops started to form, then it transitioned into a steady flow like a river. Tears were rolling off my bloody face and falling onto my bloody tuxedo. A minute later a nurse picked me up and sat me in a chair. Everyone around was trying to console me saying that she was going to be okay. I started to believe that and I started praying that she would be. I sat in the waiting room for the next two hours, waiting for an update on her condition. Finally a doctor came back and sat right next to me. He said “I’m sorry…”. I looked at him before tears started to form from my eyes again. I sat there for ten minutes, crying until Katherine’s parents came to get me with tears dripping from their eyes. They helped me into the car and took me to their house. As I approached the front door, sadness began to overwhelm me. We walked inside and they took off my bloody tuxedo suit. They laid me on the couch and I just laid there quiet and soulless. Everything around me was blurred. I listened to two voices as I laid there on the couch, lifeless. Katherine’s mom walked up to me and started to say “Katherine told us she loved you since the first time she met you”. My mind began to fill with memories of Katherine. Tears started to roll from my eyes again and I just started to cry until I passed out. That day, calamity officially took over my life. Every day was lifeless and meaningless without the presence of Katherine until the funeral. When I arrived at the funeral I was met by Katherine’s parents. Tears weren’t rolling down my face this time. They were drops of life dripping away. I saw the casket being brought out to the middle of the area where we were in. As I slowly took my seat closest to the casket, I listened to people come up and say what they had to say about Katherine. Katherine’s mom came up to talk. In her hand was a letter. As she reached the microphone she read the letter. “I finally found my true love for the first time. He is the one and only person that I have met that truly showed me what it is like to be in love. The conversations we had were neither ending nor boring. Everything about him fascinated me. He was the most sweetest, helpful, and loving boy that I have ever met in my entire life. He never made me sad or cry. After prom, I think I am going to ask him out to be my boyfriend. I just want him to stay with me forever. Maybe we might end up getting happily married to each other, but for now I just want him to always stay by my side. I hope he feels the same way about me. OH and I finally found out his full name in just two days! His name is Brian H. Phan. Well that’s all I have for now. Maybe I’ll show him this letter I wrote. Right now, the only thing I care about is being with that one special person and that one special person is you Brian”-Katherine. The air was silent. The only thing that broke the silence was the sound of me crying and choking back on my tears in despair. Everyone started to clap for me and urged me on to say what I had to say. After a moment, I recovered and began to walk up to the microphone. “Katherine… You truly loved me for who I was. The loser I am. The guy with no friends. The shut-in dweeb that never talked to anybody. And I loved you. I loved you for who you were. Everything about you caught my attention. I felt the exact same way you did when you wrote that letter and I still do. I wish you were right here by my side right now laughing, smiling, and talking like how you did when we first met. You were the first person that I could actually call a friend. You were my everything. I will cherish these memories forever and ever. Our bonds will never be destroyed. I will become successful. I will become strong. And lastly… I will stay by your side no matter what happens”. After a moment everyone stood up clapping and sobbing. Katherine’s parents came to hug me as I stood sobbing away. I had determined that I will do everything for Katherine. I will keep her in my heart. I will not give up on her and neither will she give up on me. Lastly, the bond between the two of us will never break or disappear, only grow with love. |
