Day 1 The Soundtrack To Your Life February 1st, 2016 |
No matter how you feel about the 1980's, you've got to admit it wasn't dull. Those were the years I was in high school and college. The eighties, I explain to my sons, was not a serious decade. Yes, serious and important events took place, but those years contained a lot of silliness. We had the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Rubix's Cube, Bart Simpson, and Chia pets. The slang sounded like it came from a thesaurus: totally, awesome, excellent, bogus, and radical. Then there were the movies. Horror movies and teen flicks abounded. I remember seeing the movie Superstition, a film so awful the entire theater made fun of it. A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and The Shining all came from those years. I couldn't watch those; they were too scary. The teen flicks were fun, though. The one I liked best, that many people liked best, was Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Charming, irreverent, and funny, it was a movie that everyone could relate to. Ferris turned skipping school into an art form, and invited me to come along. I still enjoy Ferris, and I watch the film at regular intervals. The Swiss electronic band Yello had their song "Oh, Yeah in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and that song summed up the sweet, high-energy silliness of the 80's. Today, when my husband and I listen to it, we make the "domp, domp" and " chicka chicka" noises along with the song. And so do our kids. |
