The Note...

         Sitting with her friends in the lunchroom, June’s friend giggled and whispered in her ear. June turned her head in the direction her friend pointed, and when she found him, Johnny, the most popular boy in 5th grade was staring at her with a huge smile on his face, and she blushed, and everyone giggled.

         She noticed him pass a folded up piece of paper and whisper to his friend, who looked and found June and then gave a small chuckle to his friend. The boy passed the note to the next person, pointing June out, and down the line it went until the note reached her hands.

         By the time the note reached her hands, he cheeks had turned red as a beet. She was embarrassed but curious as to what she would find.

         Carefully she unfolded the paper. Her friends crowded around looking over her shoulder to make sure they would be able to read the note that Johnny felt confident enough to send with the looming threat of peer-mocking that would surely follow. June, - and everyone else, began to read the question contained in it:


          “Hi June,
          I see you have a cupcake in your lunch. Can I have it?
          Check Yes ___ or No ___
          Johnny”
