The Mystery of Rainbow Street

          Rainbow Street is a dead end street with five houses.
There are two houses on the right side, and there are three
houses on the left side. Every house has two floors and an
outdoor porch in the back. Rainbow Street is connected to
Main Street. There is a wooded area beyond the end of
Rainbow Street.
          On the right side of Rainbow Street, there is a blue
house, which is the closest house to Main Street. There is
a red house next to the blue house. There are three big
trees next to the red house, and the trees are at the end
of the street.
          On the left side of Rainbow Street, there is a green
house, and it is directly across the street from the blue
house. There is a yellow house next to the green house,
and it is directly across the street from the red house.
There is an orange house next to the yellow house, and
it is directly across the street from the three big trees.
The orange house is at the end of the street.
          It is a Monday in the third week of March. There are
eight college students, and they are on their Spring Break.
There are four men and four women. There is John, who has
rich parents. The other three men are Ben, Dave, and Mike.
The four women are Janice, Karen, Mary, and Nancy.
          The five houses on Rainbow Street are often rented
by college students on their Spring Break. The eight college
students are going to rent four of the houses for five days
and four nights. They are going to rent the blue house, the
red house, the green house, and the yellow house.
          There are two young women from another college.
They are Kathy and Linda. They are going to rent the orange
house for five days and four nights. All ten of the college
students would be leaving on Friday morning.
          There is the jewel of Rainbow Street. This jewel is
not like any other jewel on Rainbow Street. John is the only
person who knows where the jewel is hidden. The jewel could
be hidden on the land surrounding any of the five houses, or
it could be hidden on the outside of any house on Rainbow
Street. The jewel could also be hidden inside of the blue
house, the red house, the green house, or the yellow house.
The jewel is not inside of the orange house. The jewel was
not on Rainbow Street 25 years ago. The jewel was not
within 50 miles of Rainbow Street 25 years ago.
          John is offering a one hundred dollar reward to
anyone from his college who can find the jewel. If any
of the other seven people from his college finds the
jewel, or tells him what the jewel is before Friday,
then John would write the person a check for $100.
          The five houses have bushes in the front yards.
There are gemstones around the bushes in the front
of every house.
          The blue house has blue gemstones and shiny
white gemstones around the bushes in the front yard.
          The red house has red gemstones and shiny
white gemstones around the bushes in the front yard.
There is a small stained glass window above the front
door. There is a picture of a flower in the stained glass
window. There are five diamonds in the flower. The
diamonds are sticking out of the flower about one
quarter of an inch.
          The green house has green gemstones and shiny
white gemstones around the bushes in the front yard.
          The yellow house has yellow gemstones and shiny
white gemstones around the bushes in the front yard. There
is a large white flower pot in the front yard. The flower pot
is on the ground on the right side of the front steps. The
flower pot is empty. There is a round blue gemstone on
the outside of the flower pot. The blue gemstone is near
the top of the flower pot.
          The orange house has orange gemstones and shiny
white gemstones around the bushes in the front yard. There
is a rainbow painted on the side of the orange house. The top
of the rainbow is about ten feet above the ground. Anyone
who is standing in the front yard of the red house can
see the rainbow. There is a diamond in the middle of
the rainbow. The diamond is glued to the orange house.
The diamond is sticking out of the rainbow about one
inch.
          The blue house has a gemstone table with a neon
blue apatite table top in the living room. The table is 28
inches long and 14 inches wide. The blue house also has
a sapphire blue table lamp in a bedroom.
          The red house has a painting of Rainbow Street
in the living room on the wall above the fireplace. The
painting shows all five houses on Rainbow Street in the
summertime, and there is a rainbow in the sky. The name
of the painting is "Rainbow World." The red house also
has a crystal table lamp in a bedroom. There is also a
copper table lamp in another bedroom.
          The green house has a small white marble table
in the living room. The marble table is in the shape of
an oval. There is a round green gemstone in the middle
of the marble table. The green gemstone is part of the
marble table. The green house also has an emerald
green table lamp in a bedroom.
          The yellow house has an antique gold clock in
the living room on the mantel above the fireplace. The
yellow house also has an amber glass table lamp in a
bedroom. There is also a brass table lamp in another
bedroom.
          Forty years ago, the five houses on Rainbow
Street were not being rented. The people who lived
in those houses 40 years ago and earlier would live
there all year long.
          Fifty years ago, there was a young woman who
lived alone in one of the five houses on Rainbow Street
who was murdered. Her name was Paula. The murder
happened on a Friday night on March 15th. Paula was
stabbed to death in her bedroom. She was stabbed in
the back three times. She was robbed.
          The murder was discovered the next day at 4:30
in the afternoon. Paula was found dead on the floor.
The murder was never solved.
          The jewel of Rainbow Street is one word. The
name of the jewel does not begin with any of these
ten letters: k l m n o p q x y z. The jewel of Rainbow
Street has at least four letters in its name, and no
more than nine letters.


          If the jewel has 4 letters in its name, then the
          murder was committed in the blue house.

          murder was committed in the green house.

          If the jewel has 6 letters in its name, then the
          murder was committed in the red house.

          The eight college students would draw cards to
determine which house each person would be sleeping
in for the next four nights. John has a deck of red cards,
and he removes the four kings and the four queens. The
four men would draw a king, and the four women would
draw a queen. There would be one man and one woman
staying in a house.
          Ben draws the King of Clubs, and he would be
staying in the green house. The woman who draws the
Queen of Clubs would be staying with him in the green
house from Monday through Friday.
          Dave draws the King of Hearts, and he would be
staying in the red house. The woman who draws the
Queen of Hearts would be staying with him in the red
house from Monday through Friday.
          Mike draws the King of Spades, and he would be
staying in the blue house. The woman who draws the
Queen of Spades would be staying with him in the blue
house from Monday through Friday.
          John draws the King of Diamonds, and Mary draws
the Queen of Diamonds. John and Mary would be staying
in the yellow house from Monday through Friday.
          Paula's occupation has 15 letters in its name.
The name of her occupation does not have these five
letters: i m n o u.
          When Paula was working, she would ask many
people every day if they want insurance. However, in
most situations, she would not ask any of the people
if they want insurance.
          The other three women would draw a card from
the remaining three queens. There are six ways in which
the three queens can be drawn. The queen that each
woman draws determines the first letter in the name
of Paula's occupation. The answer is in the cards.

it was hidden. He also told them that they all looked
at the jewel many times.
