The Hard Work
The work is hard, but the figure must be finished.
This time a bird, next time maybe a monkey
to go with the others. Under the red pebbles,
on the high plateau the worker sees the white soil.
He smiles because he knows the climate does not
change very much. It will keep the figures undisturbed
for many cycles to come.
His father worked on a tree and his son
will work on a circle, like the blessed sun.
What more can one do to please a deity
who he will meet after he dies.
His family has gained great honor.
Afterlife will be good to them all.
He bows his head and returns to work.
