Awakening

The warm, quiet silence of the night is interrupted by the timeless roar of my alarm clock. It goes off everyday at the same precise time, uncaring of my tired soul and my sincerest desires to keep on dreaming. I open my eyes slowly, my body glued to the top of my bed. The soft white blankets compose a symphony of touches and whispers over my waking skin. It is time.

I turn off the alarm as I normally do and I let myself get carried away into a dreamy paradise. Merciless, the alarm clock sounds once more and sets upon me the burden of passing time. There's no more time to sleep. I have to tend to my responsibilities and start my day. I ready each aching fibre of my body for the astonishing impact of the first stretch. With a thunderous moan, half pleasure and half rejection, I stretch my legs and torso tightly. My left arm rises in the air and reaches up to the darkness surrounding me, little fragments of itself burning throughout the eternal night. I keep my arm risen for a while, searching for the inner strength to get it back by my side. But I know that if I succeed the stretching will be over and the day would have officially begun. Nonetheless my arm descends and the lonely flames disappear in the mist of night.

Meanwhile, scientists from all around the Earth celebrate and cheer. With awe and wonder, they inform the world of the most recent solar event. A massive solar flare has been sighted, proportions rarely witnessed by mankind. The mighty sun has given humanity yet another breathtaking act, showing how vast the power of nature can be and how little our own existence represents in the infinity of time and space.
