Silent Night is a Christmas staple, and a lovely piece. It was composed because the organ in a German church broke down before Christmas, and all that remained was a guitar. Silent Night was written by the clergyman there to play on Christmas. The rest, as they say, is history.
Possibly the most stirring version I’ve encountered is by Enya. She performs it in Gaelic. It’s familiar and alien at the same time, and warms me in the midst of winter’s biting cold.
