Christie, Conan and Creativity Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the creator of famous chatacter "Sherlock Holmes" and Agatha Christie that of "Poirot" and "Ms. Marple". While Ms. Marple did not make such a splash, Poirot is the main protogonist in Agatha Christies's novels. Both Agatha and Arthur became successful because of their writings both in literary circles and financially. Though born almost century apart and being of different gender(don't get me wrong, I am not discriminating. But we need to understand the reality of social implications and their impact on careers ) and original profession, they stand together because of their creativity and the common genre of their writing ( mystery). He was a medical doctor and she was a house wife. Poirot and Sherlock are similar and different. Both are eccentric, batchelors and have an ex military man as sidekick. Both are vain in their own way. Sherlock tries to impress the clients in the first meeting while Poirot does with dramatic meetings revealing his findings at the end. Sherlock is unkempt but Poirot is meticulous in dressing even to the tip of his famous moustache. People may say the authors became successful because they wrote in English. We should not be always trying analyze and criticize a book because of author's nationality. We have limited time in our lives. So, enjoy what we get our hands on including translation from other languages if we can. There may not have been one actor that presented Holmes famously. David Suche personified Poirot impressively. You may find some episodes on youtube. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, Art is long and time is fleeting Our hearts are beating funeral marches to the grave Enjoy whatever piece of creativity we come across, be it a book, architecture, painting or even a well made dress. |
