Sam, the leader of the cows
On a ranch in Southern Oregon
Assembled his herd for an urgent conference.

He told them
“There is something wrong
The humans are not around.”

Joey one of the hotheads,
Piped up,

“That's a good thing,
You know that the humans
Are monsters.

Who keeps up alive
So they can kill us,
Eat us or steal our milk.”

Samatha, one of the oldest cows
Said,
“That may be so, but that is the way
Of the world,
And at least the humans
Kept the wolves at bay.”

They debated all-day
But the humans
Never came back.

And the cows
Became afraid
Hearing the howling
Of the wolves

In the distance
As the sun set
On the abandoned pasture.
